Bắc Cạn Province – A peaceful town in the northeastern valley of Vietnam
If you are seeking a quiet, uncrowded destination perfect for truly exploring local life, Bắc Cạn Province in northeastern Vietnam is the answer mr.hotsia wants to introduce to you. This province is located about 250 kilometers north of Hanoi. It remains lush with nature, featuring complex mountains, streams, and many beautiful lakes.
Bắc Kạn is the capital and only city of this province, with a modest population of about 300,000 people (data from 2008). But what this city offers is not the number of people, but the peace and simplicity that are rare to find in big cities. The streets are wide and very quiet, so much so that you can almost have the roads to yourself for running or morning walks, an experience mr.hotsia has personally enjoyed and can attest to how rare this atmosphere truly is.
Relaxing in Bắc Kạn City
When mr.hotsia arrived in Bắc Kạn, I chose to stay atBac Kan HotelThe largest hotel in town with multiple floors and various room types. Higher floors offer beautiful city views. Although some rooms may have dust or a slight cigarette smell, it is the most comfortable and suitable hotel in this city. Room rates are around 600 baht per night, which is very reasonable for the atmosphere and service provided.
This city is unique in that it has several large hotels but very few foreign tourists, making the atmosphere peaceful and almost free from hustle. The large hotels have become like homes for travelers wanting to escape the chaos. If you choose to stay here, you will truly experience the local lifestyle.
Bắc Kạn Morning Market: Local Life and Cuisine
One place mr.hotsia must visit every time I come to this city isBắc Kạn Morning MarketLocated behind the Bac Kan Hotel, this morning market is not large but full of the vibrant colors of locals selling fresh produce and traditional foods in a simple and friendly atmosphere.
This market is like the heart of the city because here you can truly see the local way of life. People come to shop with smiles, and although some stalls may look stern, that is the charm of this small, unembellished market. The breakfast mr.hotsia likes best here is “Sticky Rice with Pork Topping,” which is hot steamed sticky rice topped with shredded pork, fried pork, and peanuts. The flavor is well-balanced and is a local breakfast not to be missed. There are also small stalls offering pho and rice porridge to try.
For lunch and dinner, I usually walk to the market or street food stalls behind Bac Kan Hotel. There are many dishes served in bowls to choose from. Interestingly, many Bắc Kạn locals enjoy eating out with Hanoi beer, sold at about 15 baht per bottle, which is very cheap for the lively street atmosphere. Although it is a small town, the food and drink scene here has its own charming appeal.
Natural Attractions Worth Experiencing
Bắc Kạn Province is famous for its still abundant nature, especiallyBa Be National ParkLocated in Ba Be District, about 70 kilometers from Bắc Kạn city, this is a recommended destination by mr.hotsia for nature lovers and adventurers.
Here you will find Ba Be Lake, the largest natural lake in Vietnam, surrounded by mountains and lush forests. There are also beautiful Puong Cave, Dau Danf Waterfall, Hua Ma Cave to explore, and Room Waterfall, another natural viewpoint not to be missed.
Although these places are more suitable for Vietnamese tourists driving themselves, for those wanting to escape the hustle and truly experience nature, Ba Be National Park is the best choice in this province.
The Peaceful and Friendly Lifestyle of Bắc Kạn People
The peace of Bắc Kạn city does not come from emptiness but from the simple lifestyle and close community bonds. The wide streets and few people make this city ideal for health lovers because you will see people exercising, running, walking, and playing tennis from early morning. Don’t be surprised if you walk on streets with almost no cars or visit a morning market that is not crowded but full of smiles and a warm atmosphere.
It is this simplicity that impressed mr.hotsia and I want everyone to experience. I guarantee you will relax both body and mind in this small town.
