Bac Lieu Province: A peaceful riverside city along the Mekong River you must experience at least once

When talking about small provinces in Vietnam that still preserve tranquility and a simple traditional lifestyleBac Lieu (Bạc Liêu)is one of the destinations that mr.hotsia highly recommends experiencing firsthand. This province is located along the coastal area of the Mekong Delta, about 280 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, bordering Hau Giang Province to the north and Ca Mau Province to the southwest. Most of Bac Lieu's land is formed from the fertile Mekong River sediment, making it one of Vietnam's important coconut growing regions.

Lifestyle and Simplicity in Bac Lieu City

mr.hotsia had the opportunity to visitBac Lieu Citywhich is the capital of this province for just one night, and I must say it was a very interesting experience. The city has a river flowing through its center, creating a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere overall. There are not many hotels here; I saw only about four, and the accommodation prices were higher than expected, possibly due to limited options. However, it offers a different feeling compared to big cities like Ho Chi Minh.

In the evening, I took a walk to the river bridge to watch a beautiful sunset and enjoy the cool breeze. Then I stopped by the Co.op Mall, which houses local food stalls and various shops. On the mall's ground floor, there is a famous fried food stall that locals frequently visit. In front of the mall, there is a juice shop with a long queue of customers. These small charms made me fall in love with Bac Lieu.

Local Foods Not to Miss

One of the things I was impressed with in Bac Lieu is the local cuisine made from fresh ingredients from the sea and river. The specialties here include fish, shrimp baked in coconut, and dishes featuring coconut as a main ingredient. Although there are many coconuts, they do not make spicy coconut curry like in our country but focus more on baking or mixing coconut into other dishes.

mr.hotsia recommends tryingFish Congeewhich is a highly favored local dish. I ate at a restaurant next to my hotel near the bus stop. This place uses fresh fish with no fishy smell. The congee is simmered until the rice grains break down and become soft on the tongue. It was so delicious I had two bowls — both seafood congee and plain fish congee. There are also great dishes like stir-fried corn with vegetables sold from street carts and rice noodles with spicy fish sauce similar to what I had at Chiang Khan market. Thailand has similar dishes that bring back memories.

Night Market and Local Life

The night market in downtown Bac Lieu is another spot I highly recommend visiting because locals gather here for dinner and lively conversations. I also stopped by to eat congee at this market. Although the stall I found wasn't very impressive, the overall atmosphere was warm and friendly. Additionally, there is a Khmer minority group living in this province, about 8% or around 70,000 people. I had the chance to chat with Khmer people at the night market, which clearly showed the cultural diversity here.

Transportation and Accessibility

To travel to Bac Lieu, the Bac Lieu bus station is about 4 kilometers from the city center and Co.op Mall. I recommend taking a motorbike taxi or a taxi costing about 30,000 Vietnamese dong for convenience. There are buses to Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon priced around 130,000 dong, departing from early morning at 6 AM until evening. There are also cheaper buses to Can Tho city. Street Coffee and Cool Breeze at Bac Lieu Bridge

Bac Lieu is a province where locals love drinking coffee. I tried sitting and sipping coffee at a recommended coffee shop area. I have noted the GPS coordinates for those who want to follow the local coffee flavors here, where you can enjoy the aroma of coffee and the simplicity of local life. Also, don't forget to take an evening walk on the river bridge to watch the sunset. This is my favorite spot because you can see the golden light reflecting on the water and truly experience a peaceful atmosphere.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Bac Lieu Province is not a bustling tourist destination nor does it have world-famous landmarks, but its tranquility, simplicity, delicious local food, and the traditional lifestyle of its people make me feel this is a small corner of Vietnam worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. If you enjoy slow travel, experiencing real local life, and escaping the hustle and bustle, Bac Lieu will definitely be a choice that won't disappoint.
