Can Tho Floating Market - The authentic charm of Mekong Delta life

When talking about Can Tho province, pronounced 'Can Tho' by Vietnamese, besides being the center of the important Mekong Delta, one thing that impressed me, mr.hotsia, greatly is the “floating market.” This is not just an ordinary floating market but a true reflection of the real life of the Mekong Delta people.

There are two prominent and distinctly different floating markets in Can Tho city:Cai Rang Floating MarketandPhong Dien Floating MarketBoth markets have their own charm and lifestyle differences, but together they make Can Tho a destination that travelers worldwide should not miss.

Cai Rang Floating Market - A bustling wholesale market full of color

Cai Rang Floating Market is located about 6 kilometers west of Can Tho city center. It is a large wholesale floating market that I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience up close. I chose to stay at a hotel near this market to wake up early and enjoy the lively morning atmosphere. From the hotel’s upper floor, I could see traditional paddle boats and old-style motorized boats floating along the Can Tho River. Fresh fruits in vibrant colors were transported on boats, including jicama, pomelo, watermelon, and pineapple, showcasing local farmers bringing their produce to sell wholesale.

The market starts around 6 a.m. and stays busy until noon, but some boats remain stationary while selling. Cai Rang Floating Market feels like a “wholesale floating market,” in contrast to retail floating markets we are familiar with, such as Damnoen Saduak or Phong Dien Floating Market.

There are several ways to get to Cai Rang Market. For convenience, I recommend buying a tour from Can Tho city. The tour covers both markets for about 300 baht per person. If you want to save money, you can take a local bus to Cai Rang Market for less than 10 baht, then rent a local boat for about 300 baht to tour the market. Taking a taxi costs about 150 baht, which I chose for speed and convenience.

Phong Dien Floating Market - A small boat market with authentic local lifestyle

Another floating market I, mr.hotsia, heard about from locals is Phong Dien Floating Market, located quite a distance from Can Tho city center. This market uses small paddle boats similar to Damnoen Saduak market in Thailand. It has a simpler lifestyle, focusing on retail sales and serving as a meeting place for local villagers. If you have enough time, I recommend buying a tour that includes both markets to get a complete picture of Can Tho’s floating market life.

Floating Markets and Mekong River Lifestyle

What makes the floating markets in Can Tho uniquely charming is the local lifestyle that still uses boats as the main means of transportation and trade, similar to what I have seen at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. However, here the markets are larger and focus more on wholesale, especially Cai Rang, where farmers bring fresh fruits from their orchards fully loaded on boats.

I, mr.hotsia, have noticed that roads in this area are expanding every year, which means these floating markets may change or even disappear in the future. Visiting Cai Rang Floating Market today feels like experiencing a traditional culture that is sadly fading away.

Atmosphere and Food in Can Tho City

After visiting the floating markets, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to stroll around Can Tho city and experience the Mekong riverside lifestyle. Here you can findvarious riverside smoothie shopsoffering choices like durian smoothies and jackfruit smoothies without added sugar, naturally sweet and very refreshing. You can sit and enjoy the view of paddle boats, ferries, and the flowing life on the river.

As for food here, you must not miss:Original Nem Nuongwhere pork is hand-shaped and grilled on skewers, including grilled pork wrapped in betel leaves, easily found on Can Tho’s walking street, and sticky rice topped with fried chicken, another famous dish to try while strolling. Can Tho Walking Streetwhich becomes lively after sunset, an unforgettable experience for me, mr.hotsia.

Summary of Visiting Can Tho Floating Markets

If you have a chance to travel to southern Vietnam in the Mekong Delta area, I guarantee that Can Tho Floating Markets are a must-visit. The bustling and large Cai Rang Market is full of boats selling fresh fruits from farmers, while the peaceful and warm Phong Dien Market uses traditional small boats. I, mr.hotsia, recommend buying a tour that covers both markets to see the full spectrum of Mekong Delta life.

Whenever I, mr.hotsia, think of the floating markets here, I imagine old-style motorized boats floating full on the river, fresh colorful fruits, and the sounds of bargaining on the boats. This place is not just a market but the life of Can Tho people still moving along with the mighty Mekong River.
