Backpacking in Hanoi 2016 with Mr.Hotsia

Hanoi, the northern capital of Vietnam, is a central point that I, Mr.Hotsia, have frequently visited over the past 4-5 years because I intend to travel to every province in Vietnam. Hanoi is a city I always stop by whether heading north or returning from Sapa or Ha Long Bay.

On the 2016 trip, I chose to fly with Lao Airlines, flying direct from Vientiane to Hanoi. The fare was about 4,000 baht per person. Tickets can be purchased from agents in downtown Vientiane, which is more convenient and faster than taking a bus for several hours.

Transportation from the Airport to the City

Upon arriving at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, the way I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend to get into the city is by taking bus number 17, which waits for passengers right outside the airport. Although it takes longer than a van or taxi, it is very cheap at only 7,000 dong (about 10 baht) and you don’t have to wait long like with vans that sometimes only depart when full. Taxis are quite expensive and you need to be careful about being overcharged.

Popular Accommodation Areas and Recommended Hotels

The best area to stay in Hanoi for backpackers and travelers seeking convenience and affordability is the Old Quarter. Here, there are cheap hotels and hostels ranging from 500 to 1,000 baht per night. You can choose according to your budget and convenience. Personally, I, Mr.Hotsia, like staying at hotelsHanoi Hostelwhich is located in an alley full of many budget accommodations. You can walk around to compare prices before staying or book in advance through Agoda for convenience.

The advantage of staying in the Old Quarter is the convenient location for walking tours, close to food spots, coffee shops, walking streets, and night markets. There are also many tour companies offering trips to Sapa, Ha Long Bay, or other destinations with competitive prices, allowing you to get the best deal you like.

Money Exchange and Mobile SIM Tips

I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend that upon arriving at Hanoi airport, you should check exchange rates at various banks before exchanging dollars to dong because some places offer better rates. Also, if staying several days, buy a mobile SIM with internet and ask the staff to install it for you for easy communication, social media updates, and travel information during your trip.

The Charm of Hanoi in Mr.Hotsia’s Eyes

Hanoi is not just a capital city with a long history but also a city full of authentic Vietnamese lifestyle that you can experience from street markets, roadside eateries, and the aroma of street food all day long. I, Mr.Hotsia, enjoy walking around Hoan Kiem Lake in the morning or stopping by a small roadside café for Vietnamese coffee.

Vietnamese Food in Hanoi You Should Not Miss, Such AsPhoBeef noodle soup served with fragrant broth, or try grilled button squid found at street stalls, which I have made a video aboutVietnamese Grilled Button Squidto share with you. There are also chicken biryani and nem chua, which are other famous dishes in Hanoi (see videosVietnamese Chicken BiryaniandVietnamese Nem Chua)

Trips to Sapa and Ha Long Bay

For backpackers wanting to visit Sapa or Ha Long Bay, I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend buying tours from tour companies in Hanoi that offer a variety of options. Traveling by sleeper train or bus on your own often sells out quickly, especially in high season. It is also more convenient and safer. Prices can be negotiated due to competition among tour companies in the Old Quarter, giving you good value.

Summary of Hanoi Travel Experience with Mr.Hotsia

Hanoi is a city I, Mr.Hotsia, feel is suitable for travelers who like backpacking because accommodation and food prices here are affordable. You also get to experience authentic northern Vietnamese lifestyle and culture. It is a good base for trips to nearby tourist destinations like Sapa and Ha Long Bay.

The important thing is to plan your trip well, including choosing airlines, transportation from the airport to the city, and selecting accommodation in the Old Quarter for convenience and cost savings. I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend bringing some US dollars and exchanging them to dong at the airport for better benefits.

For those who enjoy old town atmospheres, walking streets, and trying street food, Hanoi is a great choice for traveling in northern Vietnam.
