Da Nang, a coastal city where real life is not just romantic like in the movies
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience Da Nang, a central Vietnam coastal city many may know from the fire-breathing Dragon Bridge or the long white sandy beaches. But I will tell you about the real life of this city that I encountered — the local lifestyle, street food, transportation, and atmosphere beyond just the beautiful images on social media.
Traveling to Da Nang – The Central Vietnam Connection
Getting to Da Nang is quite convenient. It has a medium-sized airport serving domestic and international flights. It is also a main bus connection point, for example from Da Lat, which I have written about inDa Lat Bus StationThe bus from Da Lat to Da Nang takes about 10 hours through mountain and rice field routes. Many older Vietnamese prefer this bus service, while younger people often drive themselves for convenience and flexible timing.
Seaside Accommodation and City Atmosphere
Da Nang is a city with several kilometers of long beaches. The Da Nang Bay where I stayed atSeaside Hotel with Beautiful Viewlike Hai Au hotel is very charming. The hotel is not large or crowded, with only 4-5 floors and fewer than 20 rooms, making you feel truly close to the sea. Every morning, you can see fishermen pulling nets catching small fish, squid, and cutlassfish to sell along the beach road. This scene tells the story of a local lifestyle that still exists, not just a tourist spot.
For those who want to fully experience city life in Da Nang, the downtown area has several large hotels with around a hundred rooms near the Han River, which has beautifully lit bridges at night. You can stroll along the river, find food at local shops, and experience a rapidly developing city.
Street Food in Da Nang – Flavors I Will Never Forget
When in Da Nang, missing out on local food is a big mistake. I tried various street foods, from Da Nang-style banh mi with fragrant marinated pork to grilled button squid cooked fresh by the owner. The flavors are rich in true Vietnamese style — not too sweet or overly spicy (click to seeGrilled Button Squid Vietnamthat I recorded).
For those who like Vietnamese-style chicken biryani, I also recommend trying it. The taste is aromatic with spices and perfectly tender chicken. It’s clear they pay attention to every dish’s details (watch the clipVietnamese Chicken Biryaniwhere I captured the restaurant atmosphere).
Local Markets and Fascinating Lifestyles
One of my favorite experiences in Da Nang was walking through the city’s fresh market. Although not as luxurious or beautiful as markets in Thailand, Da Nang’s morning market is full of colors and stories of the locals. There is a walkway connecting two hills; the lower floor sells fresh goods, while the second floor offers many Vietnamese dishes and fresh fruit juices. I especially enjoyed sitting and eating while sipping cold aloe vera juice here (read more atDa Lat Morning Market)
Most people here still live simply. Even though the city is developing, it retains a strong local character. Both sellers and buyers come for their daily errands. I noticed some vendors don’t like being photographed, so always be careful and ask permission before taking pictures.
Continuing Travel Connections to Other Central Vietnam Cities
For those interested in traveling beyond Da Nang, I recommend exploring nearby cities like Da Lat, a cool highland city all year round. I have written about the atmosphere and special dishes such asBun Rieua local dish that feels heartwarming, or visiting markets and enjoying beautiful natural scenery.Traveling to Lam Dongis also a great option for nature and culture lovers.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
For me, Da Nang is not just a coastal city with beautiful bridges or luxury hotels. It is a city full of real local life, fresh and delicious street food, and a simple yet charming lifestyle. I recommend experiencing it yourself. Don’t just believe the images you see on social media because the reality of this city has much more to discover and learn.
If you are planning to travel to central Vietnam, try stopping by Da Nang and open your heart to experience the real life of the people here. I guarantee you will bring back stories beyond just beautiful pictures.
