Halong Bay on Land, Tam Coc Town, Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam: Majestic Nature Near Hanoi
When it comes to traveling in Vietnam that offers natural beauty and peacefulness without too much crowd, the nameNinh Binhimmediately comes to mind for many, especially natural attractions likeTam Cocor what many commonly call “Halong Bay on Land.” This is a place I, mr.hotsia, have personally visited, and I must say it is more beautiful than expected.
Ninh Binh is located about 90 kilometers from Hanoi. Traveling is very convenient with buses running every hour, including trains. If you want private comfort, you can hire a taxi directly from Hanoi. I chose a relaxed trip and booked a half-day tour for about 800 baht (550,000 dong), which was more expensive than I expected, but I chose this for a comfortable trip without tiring travel and with a motorbike pick-up and drop-off at the accommodation.
Tam Coc: The Three Caves and the Amazing River Cave Passage
Tam Coc literally means “Three Caves,” which is the highlight here. Large limestone mountains line the area, and the Ngo Dong River flows gently through this landscape. The river water passes through three limestone caves formed by natural erosion, creating a magical scene where the water seems to disappear into the earth.
I, mr.hotsia, took a long-tail boat ride along the river passing through all three caves, covering about 7 kilometers. The boatman skillfully rows with his feet back and forth. The boat slowly glides through caves where light and shadows play on the limestone walls, making you feel like you are entering another world. This beauty has earned Tam Coc the nickname “Halong Bay on Land” because of its resemblance to Halong Bay’s limestone mountains rising from the sea, but here they rise amid rivers and rice fields.
Must-Visit Viewpoint: 500 Steps Staircase with Stunning High-Angle Views
After the boat ride, I, mr.hotsia, took a motorbike to a viewpoint about 5 kilometers away. This spot has a staircase of about 500 steps. If you think it’s too strenuous, prepare well. But once you reach the top, the view is absolutely worth it: towering limestone peaks surrounded by green rice fields and a winding river flowing beneath the mountains in small sections below.
I recommend starting the trip in the afternoon around 2:30 PM to avoid the harsh sun and capture the beautiful evening light. This viewpoint offers a completely different atmosphere from the boat ride because you get a clear and wide panoramic view of Tam Coc. It left a very strong impression on me, mr.hotsia.
Accommodation and Food in Ninh Binh: Simple Yet Full of Flavor
In Ninh Binh city, accommodation costs about 400-600 baht per night, with air conditioning, hot water, and internet available. The overall atmosphere is quite simple. If you prefer peace and nature, you might choose to stay in the Tam Coc area. Although there aren’t many hotels, the atmosphere is closer to nature.
Food was another challenge on this trip. I searched almost everywhere in town for local food but found only one Bánh mì shop. So, I ordered food at the guesthouse where I stayed.Thu Guest Housewhere I stayed, ordering stir-fried morning glory and spicy pork. Here, you can set your price first, and they will cook accordingly. The taste was delicious and very satisfying to me.
Another famous dish in Ninh Binh that I didn’t try but locals love isgoat meat or white goat meatThis white goat is a local animal found on limestone cliffs in the area. There are dozens of restaurants in town selling this goat meat. The price is about 500 baht per kilogram, which is quite high. This dish is a local specialty worth trying if you visit Ninh Binh.
Halong Bay on Land Trip and Impressions from mr.hotsia
VisitingTam Coc, Ninh Binh Provincewas a fun and impressive experience for me, mr.hotsia. The pristine natural beauty and the simple lifestyle of the locals, along with home-style food that is as delicious as anywhere in Vietnam, made a strong impression.
If you have a chance to visit Hanoi, don’t forget to stop by here. It’s not far and easy to get to. You can rent a car, take the train, or the bus, all very convenient. If you like scenic views like me, I recommend going up to the viewpoint. Bring a camera to capture the beauty as a keepsake. I guarantee you will fall in love with this land version of Halong Bay just like I did.
