Mondulkiri: The Cambodian Switzerland You Must Experience Yourself
When talking about provinces with cool atmospheres and beautiful nature in Cambodia, the nameMondulkiriimmediately comes to my mind. I am mr.hotsia and I had the chance to visit myself and want to share the detailed stories of what I saw and experienced. This province might not be well known among Thai tourists, but if you love mountains, pine trees, waterfalls, and cool weather, this place is perfect for you.
Mondulkiri: A Highland Province Over 800 Meters Above Sea Level
Mondulkiri is located in the northeast of Cambodia, bordering Vietnam. It is a highland area different from the usual lowlands in Cambodia. The landscape is mostly lush pine forests and hills. I traveled there in August, and the weather was so cool and pleasant that I hardly wanted to return to the hot city. This place truly feels like the Cambodian Switzerland because of its great weather and beautiful nature.
Journey to Senmonorom: The Capital of Mondulkiri
Senmonorom is the capital city located on a small plateau on a mountain. It has a small population and a rather quiet atmosphere. I traveled from Phnom Penh by Sorya bus company, which has one trip daily at 8:15 AM. The journey took about 7 hours, arriving in the late afternoon. Upon arrival, I immediately felt the cool and refreshing air. The city has a limited number of hotels and guesthouses but is comfortable enough for those who want a peaceful rest.
The highlight of this city is the two gaur statues in the city center, which are symbols of the province and well known among locals. When people mention Mondulkiri, they often refer to Senmonorom as well.
Bou Sra Waterfall: A Waterfall I, mr.hotsia, Visited and Was Impressed By
Mondulkiri has several famous waterfalls such as Bou Sra Waterfall, Senmonorom Waterfall, and Romnea Waterfall. But the one I truly experienced wasBou Sra WaterfallThis waterfall is located in the forest and has beautiful tiers. Clear, cool water flows over large rocks. The surrounding atmosphere is filled with tall pine trees, perfect for nature lovers and hikers. Here, I took many photos and enjoyed resting while admiring the view.
The Phnong People and Their Culture Worth Knowing
About 80% of Mondulkiri's population arePhnongwhich is different from the Hmong people we know. I had the chance to talk with locals and experience their simple lifestyle. There is also the Okvau gold mine here, which I could not visit but heard is indeed located in this area.
Food and Markets in Senmonorom That I, mr.hotsia, Really Like
If you visit here, don't miss the restaurant near the gaur statues in the city center. The corner shop I recommend sells grilled buffalo and also serves as a beer garden. The made-to-order food here tastes excellent, especially the unique Mondulkiri coffee. I tried other places selling international food but still preferred this one for its bold and rich flavors.
Also, next to the market, there is a shop selling fried meatballs and smoothies which I tried and found very delicious. The aroma of spices and the crispiness of the meatballs reminded me of flavors from home.
Lifestyle and Language: The Charm of the Locals
Senmonorom has many motorcycle rental shops, suitable for those who want to explore the province by bike. Some locals speak English, and I even met children trying to learn Thai. I find this very charming because usually, I don't see many Thais learning Khmer.
Travel: Convenient and Interesting Ways
If you plan to go to Mondulkiri, I recommend taking the bus from Phnom Penh by Sorya company because it is convenient and safe. There is one trip in the morning at 8:15 AM, taking about 7 hours to reach Senmonorom in the afternoon. The road from Phnom Penh to Mondulkiri has some mountainous sections requiring caution. You can also travel from Kampong Cham or Siem Reap by transferring at Kampong Cham through Snow Junction to Mondulkiri.
For the return trip, there is a morning bus from Senmonorom to Phnom Penh. If you want to continue traveling to Kratie, Stung Treng, or Ratanakiri, you must transfer at Snow Junction as well.
Summary: Mondulkiri, A Place for Nature Lovers and Cool Weather
From my experience, mr.hotsia, Mondulkiri Province is a travel destination with a completely different atmosphere from other cities in Cambodia. The weather is very pleasant, nature is beautiful, there are many waterfalls to see, and the people are kind. There is also delicious local food you should not miss.
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle and experience the peace of nature, I recommend visiting here at least once. And if you want to deeply understand the Khmer lifestyle in Mondulkiri, don't forget to visit the market and talk with the locals.
