Experience a journey to Soc Trang Province in southern Vietnam with mr.hotsia
If you are looking for a province that still preserves natural beauty and ancient lifestyles in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, Soc Trang Province is the answer I, mr.hotsia, would like to recommend you to experience yourself. This province is located on the right bank of the Masspero River, about 240 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, and lies on the route connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces. This is the route I actually traveled from Bac Lieu into Soc Trang, a distance of only about 30-40 kilometers.
Traveling to Soc Trang – The Easy Way I Choose
For traveling to Soc Trang from Ho Chi Minh City, I recommend taking a bus from the Southern Bus Station, where several companies operate, especially Mai Linh, which I have used before and found the buses clean and service excellent. For my trip this time, I traveled from Bac Lieu by local bus passing through Can Tho, the center of southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta zone. The route passes lush green rice fields and fertile land as far as the eye can see, evoking the area's abundance and, importantly, allowing a real glimpse into the local people's way of life.
Soc Trang’s bus station is about 4 kilometers from the city center. If you arrive and want to get into town, I recommend taking a motorbike taxi for no more than 30 baht. It’s very convenient and fast.Read more about Soc Trang Bus Station
The Khmer Lifestyle and Culture Perfectly Blended in Soc Trang
What makes Soc Trang Province stand out is its Khmer population, which accounts for nearly 30% of the total population. I visited the night market in the city and spoke with many locals. We communicated in closely related languages with warmth, as if stepping back into a welcoming cross-border atmosphere. The Khmer people there have dark skin and distinctive facial features. Most cultivate rice extensively, with rice fields spreading widely and clearly visible from the road. Seeing locals drying rice by the roadside is a rare sight these days.
Due to the large Khmer population, there are many ancient and beautiful Khmer temples in the city, which I have documented inKhmer Temples in Soc Trang CityThese temples are not only places of worship but also centers of fascinating lifestyle and cultural arts.
Clay Pagoda – A Destination I Fell in Love With
Another temple that impressed me greatly isBuu Son Tu Temple, or Clay PagodaLocated in the heart of Soc Trang city, this Chinese temple has a history of over 200 years. Its highlight is more than 20 clay statues sculpted by the abbot himself from age 20 to 62. Each statue is beautifully crafted and tells religious and historical stories in an amazing way. I visited in the late morning to see people worship and fully experience the daily life atmosphere of the locals around the temple.
Besides the temple’s beauty, behind it is a fish sauce noodle shop whose taste I tried and loved. Next to the temple, there are souvenir shops and local food vendors to choose from.
Must-Try Foods in Soc Trang That mr.hotsia Recommends
When visiting southern Vietnam, not trying local food is like missing the point. Soc Trang has distinct and unique dishes, especiallySticky Rice with Duck ToppingThis dish impressed me greatly. The sticky rice here is not the coconut milk sticky rice we are familiar with but regular sticky rice topped with a seasoned sauce and crispy fried duck. You can choose duck beak, duck offal, or duck meat, served with fresh vegetables on the side. The taste is a balanced salty and sweet flavor. Eating it while strolling in front of Soc Trang market enhances the local experience even more.
Additionally, I tried cold chè trôi nước with egg, a dessert new to me but very delicious and refreshing. Another common dish is roasted duck sold by street vendors and at the night market, with many shops to choose from. For pork lovers, there are pork sausage, fermented pork, and sausages from the Co.op supermarket in town, easy to buy and try.
Relaxing in Soc Trang – Budget-Friendly Hotels
For accommodation in Soc Trang city, don’t worry about prices as there aren’t many hotels but the rates are very affordable, around 300-500 baht per night. I chose to stay in the city center, which is very convenient because I could walk to Khmer temples, Clay Pagoda, and Co.op supermarket easily. Most hotels are simple but comfortable and clean, suitable for travelers who want to experience the real southern Vietnamese lifestyle without spending much.
Extending Your Journey from Soc Trang to Nearby Provinces
After fully exploring Soc Trang Province, I continued my journey to the Mekong River’s mouth to take a boat to Tra Vinh Province, a route less traveled by tourists, allowing me to see the authentic local lifestyle closely. Taking a boat across the Co Chien River and riding a motorbike through the countryside is an experience not to be missed.Read the travel story from Soc Trang to Tra Vinh here
