Bac Kan City Bac Kan Vietnam: Hidden Beauty in the Valley
When talking about Northern Vietnam, many people probably think of Hanoi, Halong Bay, or other famous tourist cities. But for me, mr.hotsia, Bac Kan City is one of those places I must say, "If you love peace and genuine nature, this is the answer." This small valley town still has few tourists, perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and experience authentic rural Vietnamese life.
I arrived in Bac Kan late last year after having visited Lang Son Province nearby, which has a similar mountainous atmosphere. (If interested, you can read about my experience atLang Son Province Vietnam) Traveling to Bac Kan is not easy because public transport is still limited, but this is part of the charm that keeps the town raw and the people sincere.
Atmosphere in Bac Kan City
Bac Kan is located in a valley surrounded by mountains and forests, making the weather cool all year round, especially in winter when temperatures drop low enough to see light mist floating above the peaks. I remember on my first morning there, waking up to a light mist covering the town with birdsong — a rare sight in big cities.
The morning market in Bac Kan is another highlight that mr.hotsia really likes. This market isn’t large or grand like those in famous cities but is full of fresh local produce such as native vegetables, seasonal fruits, and rare traditional Vietnamese dishes. I tried sticky rice with grilled pork at a small stall beside the market. The flavor was smooth with the aroma of local herbs, making me feel that the food here is not just for filling up but to experience culture and lifestyle.
Lifestyle and People in Bac Kan
Most people in Bac Kan are hill tribe locals who still live simply, warmly, and friendly towards tourists. I spoke with many villagers at the market and small villages around the town. Everyone was willing to share stories about their lives and changes honestly. Although Bac Kan still has few foreign tourists, I see locals beginning to open up more to travelers, which is positive for sustainable development.
Travel and Accommodation
Traveling to Bac Kan requires some preparation as there is no airport or direct train. You must take a bus from nearby major cities. If you have been to Lang Son Province before, traveling to Bac Kan is easier since they are in the same region with beautiful mountain routes along the way. I recommend using local buses and being ready for a bit of adventure to fully absorb the atmosphere.
Accommodation options in Bac Kan are limited, but what impressed me was a small guesthouse where I stayed. The owner was very kind, giving detailed advice on sightseeing and local food, plus it offered privacy and a warm, homely feel. For those who like simplicity, this is a perfect choice.
Local Foods Not to Miss
Northern Vietnam is famous for fresh food and balanced flavors, and Bac Kan is no exception. I tried grilled button squid with sweet tender meat and a special dipping sauce unlike anywhere else. (If interested, you can watch my grilled button squid video onYouTube) There is also Vietnamese chicken biryani, fragrant with spices and soft rice, served with fresh vegetables and spicy dipping sauce. I found that restaurants in Bac Kan focus on the freshness of ingredients.
