Delicious Vietnamese Banh Xao – Banh Xao that I must recommend
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to taste the Vietnamese specialty dish called “Banh Xao,” which is a Vietnamese pancake that many people might not be very familiar with yet. But for me, it is one of the flavors I seriously must share. When I traveled to Northern Vietnam, I did not focus on any specific province, but the Banh Xao I found in each city was diverse and deeply flavorful.
Banh Xao is a pancake made from rice flour mixed with eggs and a little coconut milk, fried until crispy on the outside and soft inside. It is filled with fresh shrimp, minced pork, or sometimes bean sprouts and mushrooms. In Northern Vietnam, I found Banh Xao served with lots of fresh vegetables, lime, a sweet and sour Vietnamese dipping sauce, and basil leaves that add a fragrant aroma worthy of praise.
Travel and Atmosphere from the Field
Once, I traveled to Lang Son province, which borders China. It has high mountains and beautiful nature. In Lang Son city, I stayed at Hoang Son Hotel, which was reasonably priced at about 600 baht per night. The hotel is located in the city center, just a few minutes' walk to a bustling fresh market full of local foods that are hard to find in Thailand.
At the Lang Son market, I found a small, long-established Banh Xao shop where the owner personally prepares every step. The atmosphere felt warm, like eating at a friend's home. I ordered one plate of Banh Xao with a special dipping sauce that was perfectly balanced sweet and sour, served with a variety of fresh vegetables such as basil, mint leaves, and lettuce that helped cut through the richness very well.
Unforgettable Taste
The Banh Xao here was crispy outside and soft inside, with fresh springy shrimp and minced pork perfectly mixed with spices. The sauce poured over the Banh Xao made the flavor smooth and refreshing. I, mr.hotsia, must say that if anyone visits Northern Vietnam, especially Lang Son province, don’t miss trying Banh Xao. It is one of the local dishes that truly reflects the culture and care in Vietnamese cooking.
Connection with Travel and Local Food
I still remember that after tasting Banh Xao, I had the chance to stroll along the Ky Cung River flowing through Lang Son city. The weather was not too hot as it was the rainy season, making the travel and local food experience even more complete. Recommended Way to Taste Banh Xao by mr.hotsia
If you want to try authentic Banh Xao, I recommend finding the opportunity to visit fresh markets in various Northern Vietnamese cities such as Lang Son or even Dalat, which also has beautiful Zen Buddhist temples to visit (read about Buddhist temples in Dalat atBuddhist Temples in Dalat) because Banh Xao sells well in morning markets and small street stalls that clearly preserve traditional lifestyles.
Also, if you travel by bus from one city to another, for example from Vinh Long bus stationVinh Long bus stationwhich is a key point in the Mekong Delta, sometimes you will see vendors selling Banh Xao along the way. It is another flavor that adds happiness during travel without boredom.
