Buôn Ma Thuột, the coffee city of Vietnam that mr.hotsia must share
When talking about Vietnam, many people probably think of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Lat, but for mr.hotsia, “Buôn Ma Thuột” is a city full of unique charm. It is a city I have personally visited, experienced the lifestyle, and tasted authentic Vietnamese coffee, known as one of the best in the country.
Buôn Ma Thuột is located in the upper Central Highlands of Vietnam. It is the capital of Đắk Lắk province, an area mostly consisting of highlands and tropical forests, resulting in cooler weather than other parts of Vietnam. I traveled there early in the year when the weather was not as hot as in Lạng Sơn province, which I have visited before (read the story atLạng Sơn Province, Vietnam). Buôn Ma Thuột has fresh air and lush greenery of trees and mountains surrounding the city that never made me feel bored.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Buôn Ma Thuột
Buôn Ma Thuột is a city that still preserves the culture of indigenous ethnic groups very well. I saw villagers from the Ede ethnic group wearing traditional costumes, engaging in fascinating woodcraft and silverwork. The local fresh market is another place I didn’t miss visiting, with fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods that are hard to find in big cities.
The markets in Buôn Ma Thuột are like the heart of the city. I explored the morning market and saw people bustling with shopping. There were fresh vegetables, fruits, fresh coffee, and local Vietnamese dishes like bánh căn and flavorful grilled pork. I also tried the grilled button squid, a signature dish here, which was tender and fragrantly infused with herbs (if anyone is interested in Vietnamese dishes, I recommend checking outGrilled Vietnamese Button Squid)
Buôn Ma Thuột Coffee — The Heart of the City that mr.hotsia Loves
Talking about Buôn Ma Thuột without mentioning coffee is like not really visiting the city. Buôn Ma Thuột coffee is one of the most famous coffees in Vietnam. The climate and soil here are perfect, giving the coffee a strong and aromatic flavor. I spent several hours walking around the coffee plantations surrounding the city and tasted traditional coffee brewed slowly drip by drip into small cups at local cafes.
An unforgettable experience was sitting and sipping coffee while enjoying the view of green mountains and listening to birdsong in the early morning. There are many coffee shops here, from small local ones to modern cafes. I recommend trying “Cà phê sữa đá,” iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk, which is smooth and very refreshing. Don’t forget to take photos of the beautiful coffee shop atmosphere here.
Travel and Accommodation in Buôn Ma Thuột
Traveling to Buôn Ma Thuột is convenient with an airport in the city and buses from other major cities in Vietnam. I chose to travel by bus from Da Lat because I wanted to enjoy the scenic route passing mountains and beautiful lakes near this city (if interested in beautiful Buddhist temples in Da Lat, seeBuddhist Temples in Da Lat)
I stayed at a small hostel in the city center with friendly owners and affordable prices. It had internet access and comfortable beds. For those who like simple accommodation but want a local atmosphere, I highly recommend this place.
Taste Local Food in Buôn Ma Thuột
Another charm of Buôn Ma Thuột is the local cuisine, which has a mellow flavor unlike anywhere else. I tried “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani,” which differs from Thai chicken biryani by its fragrant spices and very tender chicken (for those who like Vietnamese food, see more atVietnamese Chicken Biryani)
). There are also street food stalls selling fresh spring rolls and barbecue, which mr.hotsia recommends trying at least once because they are affordable and taste excellent. I often strolled in the evening to find food at the night market, where locals and tourists come to shop, taste food, and enjoy lively conversations.
Connecting Travel to Other Places in Vietnam
Buôn Ma Thuột is also a great starting point for traveling to nearby provinces like Da Lat, or if you want to experience the seaside atmosphere, you can travel to Nha Trang beach, which is not far (read about Nha Trang sea beach atNha Trang Sea Beach). If you want to travel by land to other provinces, you can use the large and convenient bus station in this city (similar to the Vinh Long bus station I have used before,Vinh Long Bus Station)
Summary of Buôn Ma Thuột Experience with mr.hotsia
For me, Buôn Ma Thuột is not just an ordinary tourist city but a city full of stories and vibrant life of its people. I witnessed the lifestyle of indigenous ethnic groups, experienced the aroma of fresh coffee, and tasted authentic Vietnamese food. It made me feel like traveling back in time to a simple yet warmly welcoming community.
If anyone is looking for a peaceful destination and wants to experience the true culture of Vietnam, Buôn Ma Thuột is the answer that mr.hotsia recommends you visit at least once.
