Chư Sê, Gia Lai Province, Vietnam: A city that perfectly blends nature and local lifestyle
If you ask me which city in Vietnam still maintains the true rural tranquility and is filled with the essence of nature alongside an unspoiled culture, “Chư Sê” in Gia Lai Province is the choice I would recommend you experience yourself. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel here and want to share my firsthand experience without theory.
Journey to Chư Sê - The Gateway to the Central Highlands of Vietnam
Chư Sê is located in Gia Lai Province, known for its mountainous terrain and lush forests. My journey here started by taking a bus from the major city of Pleiku to Chư Sê, which took about an hour. The road is mountainous with beautiful scenery and a cool atmosphere, perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities.
I clearly remember stepping off the bus at the station in Chư Sê city; the scent of earth and the freshness of surrounding trees made me feel like I was truly breathing in nature. This place does not have many tourists like the main attractions in northern or southern Vietnam, allowing me to fully absorb the local life atmosphere.
Local Lifestyle and Fresh Market in Chư Sê
One of the things I was most impressed with in Chư Sê was walking through the fresh market in the morning. The market here is not as large as in big cities but is full of fresh and diverse local products. I strolled past stalls selling vegetables and fruits grown in the area, as well as meats and traditional foods actually used by the community.
At this market, I tried simple Vietnamese home-style dishes that are hard to find in big cities, such as chicken biryani flavored with local spices and herbs different from what I’ve tasted elsewhere. These simple dishes reflect a lifestyle deeply connected to nature and local culture.

Nature and High Mountains of Chư Sê
Chư Sê is located in the high mountain area of Gia Lai Province, making it a great destination for nature lovers and hikers. I tried hiking a nearby mountain trail that was not too difficult but offered beautiful views of forests and vast green meadows, distinctly different from mountains in other provinces.
The atmosphere here is much cooler than southern Vietnam, and the pure air kept me refreshed throughout the trip, similar to what I experienced in other central and northern Vietnamese provinces like Đà Lạt, which has ancient Buddhist temples and beautiful nature.Buddhist Temples in Đà Lạtthat I visited also offered a peaceful atmosphere harmonizing with nature.
Local Communities and Culture
Chư Sê is a city with diverse ethnic communities, and I had the chance to talk with many local people about their lifestyle, traditions, and food. I was impressed by the friendliness and warmth of the people here. Even though language was a barrier, smiles and gestures made communication smooth.
Local food here uses natural ingredients fully, with rich and balanced flavors, such as the grilled button squid I tried, which is a must-try dish if you visit Vietnam (for those interested, check out the grilled button squid video I recorded onYouTube)
Travel and Accommodation in Chư Sê
Traveling to Chư Sê is quite convenient for adventurous tourists. I took a bus from a big city and local taxis are available for rent to explore around town. Although there are not many luxury hotels, there are guesthouses and homestays that are affordable, convenient, and friendly for backpackers like me.
If you are interested in accommodation in Vietnam, I recommend reading about my experience withRecommended Hotels in Việt Trì Citywhich is another example of simple lodging that feels like home and suits those who want to experience real local life.
Summary of Impressions from Chư Sê
Chư Sê in Gia Lai Province is a small city full of natural beauty and warm people. I, mr.hotsia, feel this city is perfect for those wanting to escape the chaos, experience authentic local life, and relax in the cool mountain atmosphere. If you have a chance to visit central Vietnam, don’t forget to stop here—you will love this small city as much as I do.
