Ho Chi Minh City: The city where life never stops in southern Vietnam
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel toHo Chi Minh Cityor as many still call it Saigon, a city full of vibrant energy and a blend of modernity mixed perfectly with the historical and cultural roots of Vietnam. The moment I stepped off at Tan Son Nhat Airport, I felt the lively atmosphere and colorful excitement right from the first encounter.
Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in southern Vietnam, with a population of over a million people. It is the center of economy, commerce, and culture. This city never sleeps because you will see tens of thousands of motorbikes passing through the main roads every hour, bustling roadside fresh markets filled with vendors calling out, and street food stalls welcoming tourists with bold and flavorful tastes.
Life in the Markets and Downtown Area
Visiting markets in Ho Chi Minh City is something I, mr.hotsia, never miss. I enjoy going to Ben Thanh Market, an old market and a meeting point for tourists and locals alike. This market is full of fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, spices, and many local dishes worth trying such as boat noodles, chicken rice, and nem nuong. I often stop to eat at small roadside stalls where you can experience authentic Vietnamese flavors along with a warm atmosphere like dining with family.
If you want to stroll in a more modern downtown area, I recommend Nguyen Hue Street, which becomes a pedestrian street in the evening and at night. Here, cafes, restaurants, bars, and luxury shopping malls blend perfectly. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy sipping strong Vietnamese coffee at a roadside cafe while watching people pass by. It’s a charming life scene that makes me want to freeze time right there.
Vietnamese Food You Shouldn’t Miss
When talking about Ho Chi Minh, one must mention its distinctive and unforgettable delicious food. I, mr.hotsia, really like Vietnamese chicken biryani, which you can find at roadside stalls. Grilled button squid is another must-try dish. I once recorded my experience eating grilled squid at a night market here, accompanied by a cold beer — a simple but joyful dinner. Additionally, I had the chance to try Phở, the famous Vietnamese beef or chicken noodle soup. The city has many long-established Phở restaurants that have been open for decades, allowing you to savor the rich broth and herbs. I once traveled toLăng Cô Provincenearby and learned how to prepare local dishes there, which deepened my understanding of Vietnamese flavors many times over.
Lifestyle and Transportation in Ho Chi Minh
Getting around Ho Chi Minh City may seem chaotic due to the massive number of motorbikes, but trust me, it’s the charming normality of this city. I, mr.hotsia, used Mai Linh taxi services, a reliable taxi company, but be careful with communication and price negotiation because I almost got taken to the wrong place, similar to an experience I had before atVinh Long Bus StationPreviously.
There are also buses and motorbike rentals convenient for exploring the city on your own. I like to walk through alleys to discover small cafes or unique restaurants. Sometimes, I chat with friendly locals full of stories about this city.
Ho Chi Minh and Connections to Other Cities in Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City is a great starting point for traveling to various places in southern and northern Vietnam. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled toNha Trang Seawhich is not far and easily accessible by train or bus. Nha Trang is a seaside city with clean white sandy beaches and a chill atmosphere, completely different from the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh.
If you enjoy temples and nature, traveling toBuddhist Temples in Da Latis a good choice. Da Lat is located on highlands with cool weather and has the beautiful and peaceful Truc Lam Temple, which I, mr.hotsia, have experienced and written about in a previous article.
Summary of Ho Chi Minh City by mr.hotsia
For me, Ho Chi Minh City is not just a busy big city but a place full of stories of lively people and diverse lifestyles. I, mr.hotsia, feel like I have traveled through many eras in every alley I walk and tasted food that tells the true story of Vietnam, whether it’s boat noodles, chicken biryani, or grilled button squid.
If you want to experience the intensity and vibrancy of southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is a destination you should not miss. And don’t forget to come with an open heart ready for new experiences because this city will make you love traveling as much as I, mr.hotsia, do — forever unforgettable.
