CU CHI TUNNEL (Cu Chi Tunnels Ho Chi Minh) – An Underground Path Beyond History

Hello, I’m mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you deep into the travel experience at the Cu Chi Tunnels, a top landmark that every tourist visiting Ho Chi Minh City must not miss. This tunnel is not just an ordinary tourist spot but an underground path that truly reflects the story of the South Vietnamese people's fight against American soldiers during the Vietnam War.

I, mr.hotsia, have visited here once. At that time, I booked a half-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City. The price was quite affordable, just a few hundred baht. The tour starts with watching old videos summarizing the war and the role of the Cu Chi Tunnels. Then, we were taken to see a model of the tunnels, which has up to 4 levels, including the entrance and exit under the Saigon River. I must say, just seeing the model made me feel the wonder of the warfare methods of that era very well.

What impressed me the most was actually going down and walking inside the real tunnels, which are narrow and low, requiring you to bend all the time. Tall or slightly overweight people might find it uncomfortable because the passageways are narrow and dark. But after experiencing this, you will understand why the Viet Cong won the war with such incredibly smart underground tactics. They also rent flashlights here for those who didn’t bring one or want extra light to help walk.

After walking through the tunnels, there is also an activity to test firing an AK-47, locally called the “Aka gun.” It was a popular war gun at that time. Even women can try shooting. The gun is locked onto a shooting stand, so don’t worry about recoil hurting your shoulder. I, mr.hotsia, tried shooting it and really felt the power and solidity of this gun. If anyone wants to try shooting with real bullets, there is an extra fee, which is not very expensive. It’s a rare experience for general tourists.

Route and Travel to CU CHI TUNNEL

The Cu Chi Tunnels are located not far from Ho Chi Minh City. The most convenient way to get there is to buy a tour from a city tour company. If you drive yourself, it takes about 1-2 hours depending on traffic and the route chosen. I, mr.hotsia, recommend using a tour service because there will be a guide to explain and handle everything for you.

For those interested in learning more about Vietnamese lifestyle and culture before or after visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels, you can try visitingLang Son Provincewhich I have visited and was very impressed by the peaceful mountain town atmosphere and its famous roast duck. Or if you like temple atmospheres and nature in northern Vietnam, don’t forget to visitBuddhist Temples in Da Latwhich are uniquely beautiful and peaceful.

Feelings and Atmosphere at CU CHI TUNNEL

Upon arriving at the tunnels, I, mr.hotsia, felt like I had traveled back in time to the war era. The aura of memories and hardships of the Vietnamese people at that time are intensely conveyed through the exhibits and surrounding atmosphere. Whether it’s the traps dug by the Vietnamese in the forest or the simulated war scenarios that help us clearly visualize the war.

Additionally, around the tunnels, there are small restaurants where you can try local Vietnamese food. I, mr.hotsia, tried the grilled button squid here, which was rich in flavor and fragrant with authentic Vietnamese spices. It was a great energy boost after walking through the narrow tunnels. For those who want simple Vietnamese food, there are plenty of options like chicken biryani and various snacks.

Additional Information and Tips from mr.hotsia

If you are planning to visit Ho Chi Minh City, I recommend setting aside at least half a day to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels because walking through the tunnels and listening to the explanations takes a fair amount of time. You should prepare comfortable shoes and breathable clothing because the area is quite humid and slightly warm.

Another important point is to book tours through reputable companies to ensure you receive good information and care, especially for foreign tourists who may not be familiar with the routes and Vietnamese language.

For more information about travel and accommodation in northern Vietnam or other cities in Vietnam, don’t forget to read the reviews and information I, mr.hotsia, have compiled, such asVinh Long Bus StationandNha Trang Sea Beachwhich is another interesting destination suitable for relaxation after exploring these underground tunnels.
