Eating Salted Fish Rice at Dong Hoi Mall, Dong Hoi, Vietnam: mr.hotsia's firsthand impressions

When talking about Vietnam, many might think of fresh seafood by the street or the bustling atmosphere of morning markets. But for me, mr.hotsia, this time I want to share the experience of eating salted fish rice inside Dong Hoi Mall, located in Dong Hoi, a coastal city in central Vietnam. Although not as famous as other places, it has a unique charm that impressed me enough to write about it.

Dong Hoi Mall is located in downtown Dong Hoi, not far from the famous tourist city of Lang Son (if you are interested in the northern border town atmosphere of Vietnam, I recommend readingMy story about Lang Son Province). Although Dong Hoi is not a large city, the mall here serves as a central hub for the local community's daily life.

The atmosphere inside Dong Hoi Mall and the lively food market

That day, I entered Dong Hoi Mall hungry after traveling from Vinh Long bus station, which I have used before (Read about Vinh Long bus station). The mall is not luxurious or high-end like malls in big cities but feels warm and welcoming like a local market where community members gather.

The area I was most interested in was the food zone. It was filled with stalls selling a variety of local dishes. But what attracted me the most was “salted fish rice,” a seemingly simple dish with a surprisingly complex flavor.

Salted Fish Rice – A local dish reflecting the life of Dong Hoi people

The salted fish rice here is not just plain rice topped with salty fish. It is hot jasmine rice served with sea fish that has been fermented to achieve a balanced savory flavor, combined with the aroma of Vietnamese spices. Some places even add fresh herbs like culantro or basil to enhance freshness.

The saltiness of the fish and the fragrance of the rice blend incredibly well. I tried it with a sweet and sour dipping sauce sold alongside, which added multiple layers to the taste. It felt like eating a simple meal but was fulfilling and profound like fine cuisine.

Lifestyle and journey to Dong Hoi by mr.hotsia

As a traveler who enjoys exploring local stories, I feel Dong Hoi is a city that still preserves the simple lifestyle of Vietnamese people, whether it’s the morning markets where people come and go or the mall eateries that don’t focus much on promotion.

Getting here is very convenient. I took a bus from Vinh Long, a key transit point in the Mekong Delta (Read travel details from Vinh Long). Riding the bus through the rural landscapes of central Vietnam allowed me to see the differences from northern Vietnam, where I had previously visited Lang Son Province (Lang Son Province review)

Tips for those wanting to try salted fish rice in Dong Hoi

For anyone wanting to try salted fish rice in Dong Hoi, I recommend visiting in the morning or around noon because most food stalls are fresh and offer a wide variety. Also, don’t miss exploring the fresh market zone inside the mall to see the ingredients and seafood used here.

Be prepared for the intense flavor and distinctive aroma of salted fish, which might not suit everyone. But for me, mr.hotsia, this is one of the dishes that shows traveling is not just about beautiful places but also about stories and flavors to experience firsthand.
