Eating Vietnamese roti in Dong Hoi, a small coastal town you must not miss
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Dong Hoi in southern Vietnam. Although it is not a big city or a world-class tourist destination like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, this place has a unique charm I want to share, especially the “Vietnamese roti” I tasted here. I must say it’s extraordinary and definitely different from anywhere else.
Dong Hoi is a coastal city with a peaceful atmosphere and plenty of fresh seafood to choose from. But what impressed me more was the Vietnamese roti at a small roadside stall in the morning market. I followed the aroma of crispy fried dough mixed with spices. I remember that the roti here is different from Indian roti or the cotton candy-like roti we are familiar with. The dough is thin and crispy but not too hard, with a variety of fillings to choose from, both sweet like condensed milk and sugar, and savory such as egg, sausage, or even fresh vegetables added for extra crunch and balanced flavor.
In the morning, the Dong Hoi market is bustling with locals buying fresh produce and breakfast. I tried sitting in and eating roti along with strong Vietnamese coffee. What’s special is that the coffee here has a perfect aroma and bitterness. Sipping it with hot roti is just perfect.
Compared to travel experiences in other provinces of Vietnam, such asLang Son Provincewhere I experienced the mountain town atmosphere and delicious roast duck, or Dalat city with its beautiful Buddhist temples likeTruc Lam TempleDong Hoi seems quieter and simpler, but eating roti here evokes a warm and truly local feeling.
Walking the Dong Hoi market with the aroma of roti and local food
I strolled through the morning market of Dong Hoi where vendors set up stalls selling fresh produce, seafood, and various snacks. The Vietnamese roti I ate was freshly made every time. The vendor fried the dough on a hot pan, skillfully spreading it thin and crispy just right. I chose egg and Vietnamese sausage fillings that were well-seasoned. The first bite of the roti was crispy outside, soft inside, with flavors perfectly blended with the rich fresh coffee.
Besides roti, the market also offers many Vietnamese dishes to try, including chicken biryani I have tasted in other cities or grilled button squid that is tempting. But for me, the roti in Dong Hoi is the highlight that makes this city unforgettable.
