Vietnamese Roti in Dong Hoi: A Must-Try Flavor by mr.hotsia
When it comes to street food that I, mr.hotsia, keep coming back for in Vietnam, Dong Hoi is one of the cities that impressed me the most. Especially the Vietnamese roti here — it’s not just ordinary roti but a perfect blend of crispy outside and soft inside dough with a variety of sweet and savory fillings, along with a special sauce that makes the flavor stand out even more.
Dong Hoi is a small coastal city that I, mr.hotsia, have passed through many times. The city is not as hectic as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh but has the charm of local life and an exciting fresh market. I enjoy strolling through the morning market, watching local vendors make fresh Vietnamese roti right in front of me. The thin, crispy dough is fried to golden brown before adding fillings like banana, brown sugar, or even spicy marinated chicken in Vietnamese style.
Once, when I traveled from Lang Son Province, which I have shared in an article,Lang Son Province, VietnamI chose to take a local bus to Dong Hoi to experience the local food here especially. Upon arriving at Dong Hoi morning market, I saw many vendors preparing the dough and roti fillings with dedication. The aroma of fried dough and spices hit my nose as soon as I stepped in.
Highlights of Vietnamese Roti in Dong Hoi
The Vietnamese roti here is different from the roti I have eaten in Thailand. The dough is much thinner and crispier. There is also a technique of spreading butter and sprinkling sugar all over before folding it into layers, giving a crispy texture and a smooth sweet and buttery taste. My favorite fillings are banana and finely crushed peanuts that provide a unique texture. There are also savory roti options with grilled pork or spiced marinated chicken. Eating them with a slightly spicy chili sauce adds another dimension to the flavor.
I, mr.hotsia, didn’t just taste the food but also chatted briefly with a vendor. She told me that Vietnamese roti here is a local dish passed down through generations, with recipes adapted to suit Vietnamese tastes, unlike Indian roti or the roti I’ve had in Thailand. The price is also very affordable, only 15,000-25,000 dong (about 25-40 baht), perfect for tourists who want to try delicious food without spending much.
Local Life and Atmosphere Around Dong Hoi Roti Market
The morning market in Dong Hoi is another charm I, mr.hotsia, really like. Walking around the shops selling fresh food, vegetables, fruits, and fresh ingredients mixed with the aroma of roti frying nearby makes me feel like I’m truly experiencing the local lifestyle. Besides roti, I also tried other Vietnamese dishes at this market, such as the delicious grilled button squid that I recorded in a clip.Vietnamese Grilled Button Squidwhich tastes fresh and very flavorful.
During my stay here, I often woke up early to walk to the market. Believe it or not, seeing the local way of life here helped me understand Northern Vietnamese culture more deeply, just like when I visited a Buddhist temple in Dalat.Buddhist Temple in Dalatwhere I learned about religion and the peacefulness of Vietnamese people from another perspective.
Travel and Additional Tips for Tourists
For traveling to Dong Hoi, I, mr.hotsia, recommend using local buses or reliable taxis and to be careful with communication with drivers, as I experienced atVinh Long Bus Stationbecause street names or destinations can easily cause misunderstandings.
If you want to try Vietnamese roti in Dong Hoi the way I, mr.hotsia, like it, I suggest coming early in the morning to experience the fresh market atmosphere and enjoy hot roti straight from the stove. Also, don’t forget to bring a camera because photos of vendors making roti and the morning market atmosphere will be great memories of your trip to Northern Vietnam.
