Vietnamese coastal fishing town docked with plenty of shrimp, shellfish, crab, and fish at Dong Hoi morning fish market

When talking about Vietnam, many may think of big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, or famous tourist destinations like Nha Trang and Dalat. But for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing the authentic local lifestyle at a coastal morning fish market is an incredibly fulfilling travel experience.

This time I had the chance to visit the morning fish market in Dong Hoi, a coastal city in Vietnam. This market is where fishing boats, big and small, dock to sell fresh seafood from the sea starting early dawn. The sea scent and the sounds of bargaining blend perfectly, reflecting the fishermen's life that continues in the traditional way despite the changing world.

Dong Hoi morning fish market stands out with a wide variety of very fresh seafood, from large shrimp, thick-shelled mussels, piles of sea crabs, to various species of sea fish like sea bass, mackerel, and yellowtail that still swim in water tanks before being quickly weighed and sold. I walked through the market with excitement, seeing fishermen and vendors sincerely attending to customers. Some even lifted up large black crabs to show that the meat is firm, sweet, and fresh.

The atmosphere in this market is completely different from fish markets in big cities I have visited. Here is full of lively and authentic rural coastal life. What I like most is the friendliness of the locals who smile warmly and are not rushed like in big cities. It feels like becoming part of a small seaside community.

Besides fresh seafood, the market also offers dried goods and local seasonings used by the villagers for cooking, such as dried chili, garlic, kaffir lime leaves, and homemade pickles following authentic Vietnamese recipes. I tried freshly grilled button squid, which was rich in flavor, sweet and tender, with just the right saltiness, served with a delicious dipping sauce. It was another impressive experience I recommend everyone to try when visiting here.

Lifestyle and Journey to Dong Hoi Fishing Market

This market is located in Dong Hoi city, which is not a major tourist city in Vietnam, but traveling here is convenient and not far from Lang Son city, which I have written about before.Lang Son Province, VietnamIt is another interesting city for travelers who enjoy deep exploration in this region.

From Lang Son city, I took a bus and local taxi to Dong Hoi, which took about 3-4 hours. The scenery along the way was full of green rice fields and small mountains, with locals working in agriculture. For this morning market, I recommend coming early at 5 AM because that is when fishing boats dock and the freshest seafood is available.

Dong Hoi market is also a place with very few foreign tourists, making us feel like we are truly experiencing the real life of Vietnamese people, not just a staged tourist spot.

Taste Fresh Seafood and Shop for Seafood at Dong Hoi Market

After exploring shrimp, shellfish, crab, and fish, I did not miss trying seafood sold at the market. There are small stalls grilling shrimp, squid, and steaming fresh fish with bold Vietnamese flavors. I, mr.hotsia, felt the taste here was fresher and more balanced than what I have had at big restaurants.

Additionally, I bought a large sea crab as a souvenir at a reasonable price and saw vendors carefully selecting fresh seafood, recommending buying to cook at the accommodation to truly enjoy the authentic taste of Vietnamese seafood.

For those interested in internet SIM cards for use in Vietnam, I have a recommended article.Vietnam 3G Internet SIMwhich will make your trip more convenient, helping you search for information and communicate easily during your trip.

Connect to Other Interesting Places in Vietnam

After experiencing Dong Hoi sea market, I, mr.hotsia, would like to recommend visiting other interesting tourist spots in northern and central Vietnam, such as Buddhist temples in Dalat cityBuddhist Temples in Dalatwhich are peaceful and beautiful, or if you want to relax by a beautiful sea, don’t forget to stop byNha Trang sea beachwhich has a long beach and clear clean sea water.

For those traveling by bus, I have also written aboutVinh Long bus stationwhich is an important transfer point in southern Vietnam, making domestic travel much easier.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Experience at Dong Hoi Morning Fish Market

For me, visiting the coastal morning fish market at Dong Hoi is like a journey into the core of Vietnamese fishermen’s way of life. It shows the hard work and the relationship between people and the sea that still exists. The freshness of seafood here deeply impressed me and it is a great opportunity for deep travelers like me to experience the true culture of Vietnam without embellishment.

If anyone wants to try new experiences in Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning a visit to a morning fishing market like Dong Hoi morning fish market once. Then you will understand why Vietnam is charming and unforgettable.
