Eating rice with curry on Phủ Lý street in Hà Nam Province, Vietnam
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the lifestyle and street food in Hà Nam Province (Hà Nam) in northern Vietnam. This province is not as large or famous as Hanoi or Ha Long, but it has the charm of rich local cuisine that truly represents authentic deliciousness. Especially “rice with curry,” a popular fast dish among Vietnamese people. I must say that walking and eating rice with curry on the streets of Phủ Lý city is an experience that street food lovers should not miss.
Phủ Lý is a small but lively town filled with street food stalls selling a variety of rice with curry dishes. Each stall has its own special recipe that made me stand and decide for a long time before choosing one because the aroma of spices and curry broth was so fragrant and tempting. I walked around and saw fresh ingredients prepared quickly and cleanly according to the strict standards typical of northern Vietnam. The atmosphere of locals sitting and eating rice with curry with sticky rice and fresh vegetables was simple and unhurried.
The highlight of rice with curry here is the variety of curry broths, including curry, chicken curry, stewed pork curry, chili paste, and various vegetable curries seasoned with local herbs and spices. I chose to try the stewed pork curry with a rich flavor, slow-cooked until tender with a sweet and savory broth, served with pickled and fresh vegetables beautifully arranged on the plate. This made the taste balanced and refreshing at the same time. Additionally, hot sticky rice helped absorb the curry broth well. It was a satisfying and truly impressive meal.
While eating rice with curry, I noticed that people in this area are familiar with sitting and eating by the roadside, chatting and exchanging daily life stories. I also had the chance to talk with the stall owner who told me that rice with curry is a convenient and quick meal for workers and students in the area, different from main home-cooked meals that usually take longer to prepare.
Another thing that impressed me was the price of rice with curry here, which is very cheap compared to the quality and taste. One plate costs about 20,000-30,000 VND (approximately 30-50 Thai Baht), suitable for travelers who want to try authentic local food without worrying about the budget.
The charm of Phủ Lý street food and its connection to northern Vietnam travel
Phủ Lý is not far from Hanoi, making travel convenient. I chose to take a bus from Hanoi to this province. The journey along the road is filled with rice fields and small villages that give a peaceful and warm feeling of northern Vietnamese countryside. Experiencing street food in this town is like opening a new world of flavors different from those in big cities like Hanoi or Ha Long.
