Hunting Ribbonfish in Hội An, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam: A real experience from mr.hotsia
If you are looking for a deep travel experience beyond just beautiful images, but real life, community ways, and fresh seafood with a Southeast Asian coastal vibe, I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend visitingRibbonfish hunting in Hội Anin Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. This place is not just a beautiful tourist city but also a fascinating center of culture and fishing community lifestyle.
Starting at Hội An: A World Heritage city preserving old ways
I arrived in Hội An early in the morning. The atmosphere here is very different from big cities in Vietnam. The tranquility and the ancient old town vibe reminded me of my trip toLạng Sơn Provincewhich I have visited before. Although in a different region, the sincerity of the locals and the simplicity of this lifestyle made me feel like coming home.
Walking through Hội An’s alleys, I saw small shops selling souvenirs, handwoven clothes, and inevitably roadside eateries emitting the fragrant aroma of local spices and fresh herbs.
Ribbonfish hunting: The life of fishermen and fresh seafood markets
In the afternoon, I decided to travel about 10 kilometers from the city to a coastal fishing community to experience the ribbonfish hunting lifestyle, the main occupation of the locals.
That day, I saw dozens of traditional small fishing boats lined up along the shore, loaded with freshly caught squid, shrimp, sea bass, and various fish. The fishermen here use fishing methods passed down through generations, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
I spoke with Mr. Somchai, a local fisherman, who said, “Ribbonfish fishing here requires patience and knowledge of water currents because ribbonfish come in schools only at the right time.” I watched him skillfully and quickly prepare fresh ribbonfish to sell to market vendors.
Hội An seafood market: A hub of fresh seafood and local dishes
After observing the ribbonfish fishing methods, I returned to the city to visitHội An seafood marketwhich was one of the most impressive places for me.
This market is not as large as those in big cities but is full of vibrancy and freshness of seafood. I tried freshly grilled ribbonfish at a roadside vendor; the sweet, crisp fish meat was fresh and had no fishy smell at all. There was also grilled button squid that I had seen ina video I previously recorded.Small squids grilled over charcoal, topped with a spicy dipping sauce made from chili, garlic, and fresh lime.
The food here reflects traditional Vietnamese eating culture, unlike fancy restaurants in big cities. I felt like eating home-style seafood with stories and a deep connection to the sea.
Travel and accommodation: Connecting with tourism in Quang Nam Province
For traveling to Hội An, I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a bus or van from Da Nang city, which is nearby, as it is convenient and affordable. Hội An also offers a variety of accommodations, from small guesthouses friendly to travelers to luxury riverside resorts with beautiful views of the old town.
If you enjoy a peaceful and chill atmosphere, I suggest staying at a small guesthouse in Hội An city where you can experience real local life and conveniently travel toNha Trang SeaorBuddhist temples in Da Lat citywhich are provinces I have recommended in previous articles.
A short trip full of impressions
This visit to ribbonfish hunting in Hội An allowed me, mr.hotsia, to see a new perspective of Vietnam—not just big cities or famous tourist spots but the real lives of people deeply connected to nature and the sea.
If you want to experience Vietnam as I did, try coming here once. I guarantee you will gain cultural knowledge and taste seafood flavors you must not miss.
