Fishing in Hội An, the ancient town full of charm in Quang Nam Province
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit Hội An, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. I must say, this is not just an ordinary ancient town. It is filled with the atmosphere of daily life blended with cultural charm, food, and a captivating community lifestyle that I have to share with you.
Arriving in Hội An... the ancient town that never sleeps
Hội An is famous as a UNESCO World Heritage town. I arrived in the evening when the soft sunlight shone on the old stone streets stretching along the Thu Bon River. I strolled admiring the old architecture blending Chinese, Japanese, and European styles harmoniously. The old wooden houses painted bright yellow with dark green wooden windows were very memorable.
The market atmosphere here is lively all day, from morning to night markets. I had the chance to walk through the morning market, meeting vendors selling fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and of course, local Vietnamese food filled with the aroma of spices and fresh herbs. For those interested in deep travel and food experiences, I recommend reading aboutLang Son Province, Vietnamwhich I have previously shared.
Fishing in Hội An: A local fishing experience not to be missed
One of the most impressive activities I experienced in Hội An was fishing by the river with local villagers. Early in the morning, I went out on a boat with local fishermen. The equipment was simple — just nets and small traps — along with knowledge shared by the locals about fishing methods in the Thu Bon River. The atmosphere was peaceful with birdsong, a moment when I truly felt connected to the real lifestyle of Hội An people.
After catching fish, the locals took me to prepare a simple meal by the riverbank using fresh ingredients from the river and nearby kitchen gardens. I tasted grilled fish fragrant with local herbs, dipped in the villagers’ special sauce. It was a flavor I will never forget.
Hội An cuisine that mr.hotsia must recommend
Besides fishing, Hội An’s food is another charm I don’t want you to miss, especially “Cao Lau,” a local noodle dish with thick chewy noodles made from rice flour mixed with water from natural springs in Quang Nam Province only. It is served with a rich broth, grilled pork, and fresh crispy vegetables. This taste will make you feel like you are eating a dish unique to this place.
Another dish I loved is “Banh Mi,” Vietnamese bread with various fillings including grilled pork, shredded pork, and pickled vegetables, served with a special sauce from a street vendor. From the first bite, you realize Hội An offers not only the beauty of the ancient town but also deeply delicious food.
Strolling through Hội An’s nightlife
When night falls, I walked through the night market decorated with beautiful red lanterns lining the streets. Traditional music and the aroma of grilled food filled the air. Locals and tourists blended harmoniously. I tried grilled bobtail squid at a roadside stall; its slightly sweet and salty taste paired perfectly with cold beer. You can watch my grilled bobtail squid eating experience in the video atthispage.
Traveling to Hội An and connections to other provinces
Hội An is located not far from Da Nang, a major city with an international airport, and is conveniently connected to other tourist destinations in Vietnam, such as the beautiful Nha Trang sea beach, which I have experienced atNha Trang sea beachIf you are interested in peaceful and beautiful Buddhist temples, I recommend Tang Lam Temple in Da Lat, which I have written about inBuddhist Temples in Da LatThese places allowed me to see another deep side of Vietnamese culture.
If you travel by bus, using the Vinh Long bus station is another convenient option for continuing your journey to various cities in southern Vietnam. I have used this station and shared my experience atVinh Long bus stationto help guide those who want to adventure on their own.
