Ha Giang Vietnam: The Land of Mountains and Unique Life by mr.hotsia

When talking about northern Vietnam, many might think of famous tourist cities like Lang Son or Da Lat. But there is another place that I, mr.hotsia, must say is truly "awesome" — that is Ha Giang Province, located on the border with China. I experienced it deeply and want to share it with everyone straightforwardly.

Ha Giang is a province full of steep mountains and beautiful, genuine forest landscapes. This is not a tourist city with big malls or luxury hotels like in Lang Son (if anyone is interested in the atmosphere of Lang Son where I stayed, you can check outLang Son Province, Vietnam). But Ha Giang has a rugged and adventurous charm that travelers like me really love.

Traveling in Ha Giang: A Worthwhile Challenge

I, mr.hotsia, started in Ha Giang city, a small town that looks simple but is full of life from various hill tribes. There is no airport or train station here. The main transportation is by bus or self-driven motorcycle. The winding mountain roads are challenging but so beautiful that you forget the fatigue.

One of the most impressive experiences for me was the journey to Dong Van — a small town located in the heart of the high mountains, with a morning market that is a meeting point for many hill tribes. This market is unlike any other because here you can see handwoven fabrics, silverware, and authentic local foods that you can't find anywhere else.

Lifestyle and Culture in Ha Giang

Talking with the hill tribe people here is something I, mr.hotsia, really adore because they live simply and are deeply connected with nature. I tried local dishes that were fresh and unusual, such as sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves served with wild vegetables and game meat, which is very different from the Vietnamese food I have eaten in big cities.

Additionally, there is the chance to visit Hmong and Dao villages that still preserve their traditional customs and clothing very well. I recommend anyone visiting Ha Giang to try staying in a homestay to truly experience the real life of the hill tribes, not just as a typical tourist.

Connections with Nearby Provinces

If you continue traveling from Ha Giang to Lang Son, you will clearly see the difference between the steep mountains and the lowlands with the Ky Cung River flowing through Lang Son city, which I have described in the articleLang Son Province, VietnamThis place is famous for its roast duck and has a much livelier city atmosphere.

Another interesting city in northern Vietnam is Da Lat, where I have written about the prominent Buddhist temple there, Tang Lam Temple (Buddhist Temple in Da Lat). If you enjoy peace and Buddhist lifestyle, the temples in Da Lat are another destination worth visiting.

Food in Ha Giang: Unforgettable Flavors

For food lovers like me, mr.hotsia, trying grilled button squid at the morning market or roadside in Ha Giang is a delight. The aroma of the grilled squid mixed with the hill tribe’s special spices is an experience you won’t find elsewhere (if you like Vietnamese food with a show, check out the clipVietnamese Grilled Button Squid).

There is also Vietnamese-style chicken biryani with a rich flavor. I recorded it in a clip as well (linkVietnamese Chicken Biryani). If you visit Ha Giang, don’t forget to try all the local dishes.

Summary of Ha Giang Travel Experience with mr.hotsia

Ha Giang is a province I, mr.hotsia, recommend for those who love adventurous travel, enjoy mountain atmospheres, and want to experience authentic hill tribe life. It doesn’t have the conveniences or amenities of big cities, but the richness of nature and the sincerity of the people made me fall in love with this province forever.

If you are planning a trip to northern Vietnam, try stopping by Ha Giang once, and you will discover a completely different side of Vietnam. For information on other cities I have visited in northern Vietnam like Lang Son, you can read atLang Son Province, VietnamOr if you like the sea, don’t forget to visitNha Trang Sea Beachto change the atmosphere.

Finally, mr.hotsia would like to say that northern Vietnam still has much to explore, and Ha Giang is one of those places you should not miss.
