Eating Vietnamese Tom Yum Hot Pot in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
When talking about Ho Chi Minh City, the large city full of life in southern Vietnam, many might think of bustling fresh markets, busy walking streets, or the variety of street food ready to awaken all your senses. But for mr.hotsia, one dish I am fond of and must try when visiting here is the “Vietnamese Tom Yum Hot Pot,” which is similar yet distinct from our local tom yum. Its flavor and serving style have a unique charm unlike any other.
I found this tom yum hot pot in a small alley in Ho Chi Minh City near a small fresh market. The atmosphere was filled with the chatter of vendors and the aroma of fresh herbs displayed on stalls. I chose to sit on a small plastic chair and opened a menu full of various Vietnamese dishes, but my eyes immediately stopped at this tom yum hot pot.
The Vietnamese tom yum hot pot is served in a medium-sized clay pot, piping hot. Fish balls and various meats are carefully arranged along with fresh vegetables and herbs that fill the pot with a distinctive aroma, including lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal. I really like it because it feels refreshing yet spicy, unlike our tom yum which focuses mainly on sharp sourness.
The broth of this Vietnamese tom yum hot pot emphasizes a balanced flavor with hidden spiciness from various herbs, without needing much fish sauce like ours. This makes the taste smooth and easy to eat continuously without feeling greasy. I eat it with hot steamed rice or sometimes order noodles to add and fill the bowl.
Another special feature of the Vietnamese tom yum hot pot is the unlimited fresh vegetables served alongside, including culantro, lettuce, basil leaves, and bean sprouts. mr.hotsia sees this as a charm that makes eating this hot pot fun and adds diverse textures to every bite.
Ho Chi Minh City itself is a city rich in cultural and culinary diversity. I have traveled to Lang Son Province in northern Vietnam, which has mountainous terrain and quite hot weather in summer. But here in Ho Chi Minh, the atmosphere is that of a bustling big city with very different food flavors. If you are interested in traditional Vietnamese food and want to try Vietnamese tom yum hot pot, I recommend strolling through fresh markets or local neighborhoods in Ho Chi Minh City to discover hidden delicious spots.
Besides tom yum hot pot, this city also offers a variety of Vietnamese dishes that mr.hotsia has tried, such as grilled button squid, hot grilled shrimp, and Vietnamese-style chicken biryani. Each dish carries flavors and aromas unlike our local cuisine. If you enjoy bold and fresh Vietnamese food, I recommend watching my Vietnamese tom yum hot pot eating clip on my YouTube channel to see the atmosphere and taste clearly.Click hereto watch
Getting around Ho Chi Minh City is very convenient with taxis and motorbike taxis ready to take you anywhere in the city. But be careful with communication as I almost got taken to the wrong place due to very similar street names. Using a map app makes it much easier.
If you have time, don’t forget to visit the Buddhist temple in Da Lat city, not far from Ho Chi Minh, which I have written about in an article.Buddhist Temple in Da Lat CityThis temple is beautiful and very peaceful, perfect for relaxing your mind after exploring and eating in the busy city.
For those who love the sea, I recommend stopping by Nha Trang, a coastal city with a great atmosphere and fresh seafood.Nha Trang SeaIt is also a destination with many resorts and water activities to choose from for relaxation.
Finally, if you are looking for good hotels in southern Vietnam, I recommend checking out reviews of small hotels I have stayed at in various provinces, such asRecommended Hotels in Viet Tri Citywhich have a warm atmosphere and friendly owners, suitable for travelers who want simplicity but comfort.
All of this is my Vietnamese tom yum hot pot eating experience that mr.hotsia wants to invite everyone to try for themselves. I guarantee you will taste deliciousness that is both spicy and refreshing, and see the true lifestyle of Vietnamese people in Ho Chi Minh City.
