Must-have Vietnamese souvenirs from Ho Chi Minh City
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you on a stroll to explore famous food souvenirs from Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam that I recently visited. Fresh from the field experience! For anyone who has been to Vietnam, I believe choosing food souvenirs here is one of the fun experiences not to be missed because it truly reflects the lifestyle and local food culture.
Ho Chi Minh City, or simply called “Saigon” by locals, is a city full of vibrancy and diversity, from street food, fresh markets, night markets, to souvenir shops. I, mr.hotsia, traveled here during the hot summer season, but the aroma of Vietnamese spices and herbs made me forget the heat while exploring souvenirs.
Ben Thanh Market: The Starting Point for Souvenir Shopping
If you come to Ho Chi Minh and don’t visit Ben Thanh Market, you’re seriously missing out. This market is a comprehensive and very convenient hub for food souvenirs. I, mr.hotsia, love browsing dried foods, ready-to-eat products, and local snacks here, such as crispy pork jerky, seasoned dried shrimp, delicious dipping sauces, curry powder, and many more perfect for gifts.
Importantly, this market also has shops selling fresh spices that are the heart of Vietnamese cuisine, like lemongrass, galangal, ginger, and dried chili. I personally like to bring dried lemongrass home to cook Thai food with a fragrant aroma just like dining in Vietnam.
Dried Foods and Local Snacks You Must Try
Many have heard of pork jerky or dried grilled pork, one of the top popular souvenirs from Ho Chi Minh City. I, mr.hotsia, found a small shop selling delicious pork jerky in a small alley near Ben Thanh Market. After tasting it, I was hooked and bought dozens of packs. The pork jerky here is just the right sweetness with a slight salty taste, great as a snack or with rice.
There are many snacks too, such as sugar-coated mung bean sweets, coconut sweets, or sticky rice flour treats made with coconut and brown sugar as main ingredients. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying them with strong Vietnamese coffee for an authentic Vietnamese experience.
Chili Pastes and Seasoning Sauces: Essential Helpers in Vietnamese Kitchens
For those who love cooking, I recommend buying fish sauce (Nuoc Mam), the heart of Vietnamese cuisine, spicy dipping sauces, and chili pastes sold at many souvenir shops in Ho Chi Minh. I, mr.hotsia, once bought fish sauce to cook Thai food at home; the rich flavor is surprisingly different from what we have.
These seasoning sauces have a long shelf life and are easy to carry on flights back to Thailand. They are very popular souvenirs that friends or relatives who love cooking will definitely appreciate.
Travel and Connect with Northern and Southern Vietnamese Experiences
For me, mr.hotsia, this trip to Ho Chi Minh City also reminded me of my visit toLang Son Provincein northern Vietnam. There, the mountainous landscape and cool climate are completely different from Ho Chi Minh, but the food and souvenirs have their own charm. If you plan to travel northern Vietnam, feel free to read about my experiences there.
Additionally, I also experiencedVinh Long Bus Stationwhich is a key transfer point in the Mekong Delta, near a local market with a wide variety of fresh and dried seafood souvenirs. Perfect for those who prefer fresh and authentic seafood flavors as gifts.
Tips from mr.hotsia for Buying Souvenirs in Ho Chi Minh
1. Bargaining is possible but do it with a smile and kindness because most vendors are friendly and willing to share good information with tourists.
2. Buy souvenirs at daytime markets like Ben Thanh Market for a wider variety and more affordable prices than big shopping malls.
3. Taste before buying, as many shops offer samples. I, mr.hotsia, often use this method to ensure the souvenirs I buy are truly delicious and satisfying.
4. For fresh or refrigerated souvenirs, check the storage and packaging methods to ensure they are suitable for traveling back to Thailand.
