Vietnamese Food in Ho Chi Minh City, a city of flavors you must try

When talking about Vietnam, many people probably imagine a lively city, bustling fresh markets, and fragrant street food. Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon, is the place where I, mr.hotsia, truly experienced authentic Vietnamese flavors. This city is not just a big city but a melting pot of diverse cultures and perfectly blended tastes.

I started the first morning of my trip by walking along a local street market filled with lively conversations and the scent of fresh spices. The morning market in Mukdahan that I once visited in northern VietnamMukdahan Morning Marketreminded me of a similar atmosphere here but in the form of a big city. Here, you can find fresh vegetables, a variety of fruits, and Vietnamese dishes ready to be served for you to taste immediately.

The first dish I must recommend is “Phở,” the iconic Vietnamese rice noodle soup. I vividly remember the first time I tasted the broth, which was rich yet clear, served with fresh beef, green onions, cilantro, and lime squeezed for freshness. The small roadside shop I stopped at was run by the owner himself. The broth here was mild and not too salty, just like what I had tasted in Lạng Sơn Province.Lạng Sơnwhich is famous for roasted duck dishes, but in Ho Chi Minh City, the flavors are lighter and more drinkable.

For those who like spicy food, you must not miss “Bánh Hỏi” or grilled button squid that I tried from a roadside stall in the night market area. The aroma of grilled squid mixed with spices and a special Vietnamese chili sauce was irresistible. I even recorded a clip of me eating this grilled button squid on YouTube.Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidI can say the taste was fresh and the squid meat was tender and bouncy, something hard to find elsewhere.

Next, I walked to a Vietnamese chicken biryani shop, called “Cơm gà” in Vietnamese. I often find this shop in a small alley in Ho Chi Minh City recommended by locals. The shop is not large, but the fragrant rice cooked with spices and the tender chicken made me enjoy my meal leisurely. Some chicken biryani places in Ho Chi Minh City differ from those I’ve had in other cities because here they have a unique aroma of pandan leaves and fried garlic sprinkled on top, adding a perfect crispiness. You can watch the video I recorded hereVietnamese Chicken Biryanito see the food preparation and shop atmosphere.

Atmosphere and street food lifestyle in Ho Chi Minh City

What makes Vietnamese food in Ho Chi Minh City charming is not just the taste but the eating atmosphere where everything feels friendly and accessible. I, mr.hotsia, often enjoy eating in small shops with old wooden tables and the bustling sounds of passersby. Sometimes I choose to sit at roadside food courts offering a variety of dishes like chicken rice, biryani, and phở, all at reasonable prices, perfect for those who want to try many dishes in one day.

Getting around this city is quite convenient. I use motorbike taxis or Grab to move between different spots. If you want to experience authentic local travel, I recommend taking a bus that passes local markets or areas with many eateries like the Bến Thành district, which is a commercial and tourist center. Here you will see the real Vietnamese way of life and a wider variety of street food than anywhere else.

Connecting experiences with travel in Vietnam

If you have time and want to explore other sides of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is a great starting point before traveling to other provinces such as I have visitedLạng Sơn Provincefamous for roasted duck dishes, or Dalat city with beautiful Buddhist temples and a cool atmosphereBuddhist Temple in Dalatwhich I traveled to with great impression.

For those who love the sea, I recommend stopping byNha Trang Sea Beachwhich has long beaches and clear sea water. Here you can relax and enjoy fresh seafood after fully experiencing the culture and food in Ho Chi Minh City.
