Hoi An, Vietnam's World Heritage Site, a must-visit destination

When it comes to a city that tells stories through rich ancient architecture, Hoi An is one of the first names I, mr.hotsia, immediately think of. This small riverside town in central Vietnam is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved traditional architecture combined with a thriving trading culture dating back to ancient times.

The first time I arrived in Hoi An, I felt like I had traveled back in time. The streets paved with old stones, the brightly painted wooden shops that still maintain their unique character, and the colorful lanterns hanging from afternoon until night create a very romantic and charming atmosphere.

Local Life and Markets Not to Miss

One of my favorite experiences was strolling through the central market in Hoi An. The market is not large but full of lively locals selling fresh produce, local foods, and souvenirs that are hard to find elsewhere, such as fresh vegetables, spices, and authentic Vietnamese handwoven fabrics. There are also street food stalls where I tried the "Vietnamese Chicken Biryani," which was flavorful and fragrant, so good I had to order several more plates. (If anyone is interested in deep Vietnamese cuisine, I recommend watching my Vietnamese Chicken Biryani review onYouTubeas well.)

The market atmosphere here reminded me of morning markets in other provinces of Vietnam, such as the Mukdahan morning market I have visited. Each local area has its own charm. For those who enjoy local markets and experiencing real local life, I recommend visiting the Hoi An market in the morning to see the lively daily life of the locals and taste fresh, unique foods.

Intense Architecture and World Heritage Significance

What makes Hoi An stand out from other cities is the preservation of houses and buildings that blend colonial styles with Chinese and Japanese influences harmoniously. There is a beautiful Japanese Bridge, a popular photo spot, and an ancient Chinese temple still used for religious ceremonies.

As I walked around the town, I felt the dedication and love for cultural preservation by the locals who continue to live traditionally. Despite the many tourists visiting, Hoi An has not lost its historic charm.

Local Food to Try and Nighttime Atmosphere

When it comes to food, I, mr.hotsia, did not miss trying "Grilled Button Squid," a popular Vietnamese seafood dish with a sweet and salty flavor, grilled to a fragrant perfection. I found this dish at a small local restaurant near the river in Hoi An. (If you want to see how it looks and how to eat it, check out myGrilled Button Squid videoas well.) There are also many local snacks and desserts to try.

At night, Hoi An lights up with lanterns throughout the town, creating a warm and very romantic atmosphere. I often take a long-tail boat ride along the river to enjoy the nighttime city views, an experience I highly recommend. The boat ride feels like entering a peaceful and beautiful other world.

Travel and Connections to Other Provinces in Vietnam

Hoi An is located not far from Da Nang, a major city in central Vietnam. The trip from Da Nang to Hoi An takes about 30-40 minutes, making it very convenient for tourists who want to stay in the big city and visit Hoi An as a day trip or stay overnight to soak in the atmosphere.

For those interested in exploring northern Vietnam, I recommend stopping byLang Son Provincewhich I have also visited. It offers different landscapes and lifestyles but is full of authentic Vietnamese charm. If you prefer clear sea beaches, don't forget to visitNha Trang Seaanother popular relaxation spot.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, Hoi An is not just an ordinary tourist city; it is a living history lesson, a cultural melting pot, and a place where I experienced the true Vietnamese way of life. The food, markets, and people here are incredibly warm and friendly.

If you are looking for a travel destination in Vietnam that feels warm, classic, and full of stories, Hoi An is my final answer that I want everyone to experience at least once in their lifetime.
