Lai Chau Coffee, the rich aroma from northern Vietnam

If you have followed my work, mr.hotsia, for a long time, you know I love to hunt for great coffee in remote corners of Vietnam. Lai Chau coffee is one of the precious treasures I found in northern Vietnam. Though it is not as famous as Dalat or Sapa, its taste and charm certainly stand out.

Lai Chau is a city in a northern province of Vietnam hidden in high mountains. The travel routes may not be as convenient as big cities, but if you enjoy adventure, immersing yourself in nature, and authentic local culture, visiting Lai Chau will leave you with unforgettable impressions.

Journey to Lai Chau and the surrounding atmosphere

I traveled from Lang Son city, which I have shared about in an article.Lang Son Province, VietnamDriving through winding steep mountain roads, passing tribal villages that still maintain a simple way of life. Although tiring, the scenery on both sides filled with green rice fields and light mist eased the fatigue considerably.

Upon arriving in Lai Chau, I experienced a local market full of people wearing traditional costumes, fresh vegetables and fruits, and inevitably small coffee shops scattered along street corners. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee gently touched my nose, attracting me to stop and fully savor the local coffee beans.

The taste of Lai Chau coffee

The Lai Chau coffee I tried was distinctly different from southern Vietnamese or Dalat coffee. The beans grown in this highland area have a strong flavor concentration, with aromas of roasted nuts and lightly fermented fruit, blended perfectly with the creamy texture from the sweetened condensed milk added.

I like to order traditional hot coffee made with coarsely ground roasted beans, poured into a slow drip filter. After a while, the coffee slowly drips into a clear glass placed below. The rich aroma and dark color of the coffee truly evoke the feeling of a morning in this small town.

For those who want to try a stronger difference, I recommend the black coffee here, as you will taste the true bitterness of carefully grown highland coffee beans. If you prefer milk coffee, you can add sweetened condensed milk to your liking for sweetness and creaminess.

Why Lai Chau coffee is special

Besides its distinctive taste, Lai Chau coffee reflects the lifestyle of the local people who hand-cultivate coffee with heart on cool climate and fertile soil. Coffee farming here is not just a business but an integral part of culture and daily life.

I had the chance to talk with some local coffee growers. They said Lai Chau coffee beans are carefully handpicked to ensure the best quality before being roasted and packaged traditionally, which preserves the freshness and unique aroma.

Lai Chau coffee and cultural tourism

When you visit Lai Chau, besides enjoying delicious coffee, you also have the opportunity to experience the lifestyles of various hill tribes here, such as the Hmong and Saek tribes, who remarkably preserve their traditional customs and costumes.

I recommend taking a walk through the morning market in Lai Chau to see fresh mountain produce including vegetables, fruits, and handmade items like silverware and traditional woven fabrics. This market offers a warm and friendly atmosphere, unlike tourist markets found in big cities.

Connecting impressions with travel in northern Vietnam

If you enjoy Lai Chau coffee, I suggest planning to visit other important tourist spots in northern Vietnam, such as Lang Son city, which I have written about in an article.Lang Son Province, VietnamIt offers beautiful nature and interesting culture. Additionally, if you like studying Buddhism and peaceful atmospheres, I recommend stopping byBuddhist temples in Dalatwhich impressed me greatly on my previous Vietnam trip.
