Lion Dance in Vietnam: A Performing Art Reflecting Deep Culture

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to watch the Lion Dance in Vietnam at Vi Thanh city, located in Hau Giang province in southern Vietnam. Seeing this performance in person was a unique experience because it is not just entertainment but a vivid and intense cultural expression.

Vietnamese Lion Dance is influenced by Chinese culture but has its own unique characteristics rarely seen elsewhere. Each lion is intricately crafted, brightly colored, and large in size. The Lion Dance in Vi Thanh is not just about movement skills but a serious competition among lion dance teams who coordinate precisely, climbing tall poles and performing thrilling acrobatics.

I have seen Lion Dance performances in many countries, but Vi Thanh's level of difficulty and perfection is very high. Two performers in a lion costume must coordinate closely, falling and rolling together without any stumbles or mistakes. It is amazing how they can do this safely without falling from the high poles.

The day I watched was during a festival with paid admission, but the atmosphere was lively. Locals from various areas came by boat to the nearby canal event, which was filled with boats lined up, reminiscent of traditional Thai temple fairs in the past. It reminded me of when I took a boat to a temple fair near Bang Bo, Samut Prakan, where there were folk performances and a warm community atmosphere.

One of the most impressive things was the second lion in the event, which adapted its playing style in a unique and captivating way. It was never boring. You can watch the clip I recorded inVietnamese Lion Dance Clipto clearly see how fun and exciting this performance is.

Cultural Connections and Travel in Vietnam

Traveling to watch the Lion Dance in Vi Thanh reminded me of other provinces in Vietnam I have visited, such asLang Son Provincelocated in the northern part of the country with complex mountainous terrain and diverse cultures, or Da Lat city with its beautiful and peaceful Buddhist temples likeTruc Lam Templewhere I also experienced a serene atmosphere and deep faith.

But in Vi Thanh, the Lion Dance culture clearly reflects a blend of Chinese and Vietnamese influences, which I really appreciate in my travels — learning and seeing the true cultural diversity of each locality.

Travel and Atmosphere in Vi Thanh City

Vi Thanh is a small city in Hau Giang province, located in the Mekong Delta area. The atmosphere here is full of simple and warm local life. I strolled through the local market filled with fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and various foods. The scent of Vietnamese spices and herbs filled the air, making me want to try everything from the street food stalls.

During my trip, I planned to use theVinh Long Bus Stationto travel to nearby cities. Transportation in southern Vietnam is mostly convenient with many bus routes. I took this opportunity to capture photos and record all my impressions as memories.

An Unmissable Experience

For those interested in culture and wanting to experience the Lion Dance in Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Vi Thanh during this festival. You will see a truly perfect and enjoyable performance. Additionally, you will experience the local way of life that still preserves traditional customs excellently.
