A bright morning with a meal on a boat at Can Tho floating market, Vietnam
I am mr.hotsia and this time I will take everyone to experience the riverside lifestyle along the Mekong River in Can Tho province, Vietnam through the “Breakfast on boat” experience at Can Tho floating market, the most famous and largest floating market in this region.
That morning, I woke up early, walked out from my riverside accommodation in the city of Can Tho not far away, then took a taxi heading to Can Tho floating market. It took about 15 minutes and the taxi fare was not expensive, around 150 Thai baht. Compared to the lively atmosphere of the market just starting, the morning ambiance on the river was bustling with many vendor boats lined up along the river.
The floating market here is divided into two main zones: the wholesale market in the middle of the Cai Rang river (Cai Rang floating market) and the smaller boat market like Phoung Dien floating market. I chose to cruise the Cai Rang market because it is large and clearly shows the lifestyle of the Mekong river locals.
I rented a boat from a local villager who spoke moderate English. The small wooden boat was sturdy and came with a small mat to sit on for breakfast on the boat. As the boat floated along the river, I started looking for food from passing vendor boats selling grilled pork sticky rice, fish porridge, noodles, Vietnamese baguette, and various fresh fruits.
I ordered grilled pork sticky rice for breakfast from a nearby boat whose owner smiled brightly and served hot Vietnamese coffee to drink alongside. The aroma of grilled pork combined with the sweet and rich sticky rice still warm, plus the smooth bitterness of Vietnamese coffee, made this breakfast at the floating market more special than I expected.
While eating, I looked around and saw many fruit vendor boats floating by, carrying pineapples, watermelons, mangoes, and jicama. These boats brought fresh fruits from rural farms to wholesale traders in the market. I took photos and videos to capture the atmosphere because this is not just an ordinary floating market but a major trading center for the Mekong river community that firmly preserves its traditional identity and lifestyle.
I also talked with locals who rowed their boats selling goods. Some said that on busy market days they sell a lot, but on rainy or bad weather days, customers decrease. The market operates roughly from 6:30 AM until noon. When the sun gets strong, the market quiets down as vendors row their boats back home.
Travel and tips for tourists
For those who want to visit Can Tho floating market like me, there are several ways to get there: buy a tour from Can Tho city that covers both Cai Rang and Phoung Dien markets in one program, or if you want freedom like mr.hotsia, you can take a taxi or bus directly to the market. Taxi fare from the city is about 150 Thai baht. Boat rental for cruising the market costs around 300 baht per boat, seating 2-3 people.
I stayed at a hotel near Cai Rang floating market with a view from the upper floor overlooking the market in the early morning. The hotel was affordable and very convenient for tourists who want to wake up early to experience the real floating market atmosphere.
Can Tho floating market in the context of Vietnam and Mekong tourism
Can Tho is a city located in the Mekong Delta region, which has been an important water trade area since ancient times. The floating market here is not just a place for buying and selling but also a cultural and community hub for riverside residents who remarkably maintain their traditional way of life.
