mr.hotsia eats Vietnamese food in Dong Xoai, Binh Phuoc Province
For me, mr.hotsia, traveling in Vietnam is always an exciting adventure. This time I headed from Thu Hieu Mot city, Binh Xuang Province, driving north to Dong Xoai city, the capital of Binh Phuoc Province, a province not yet well known to foreign tourists. But for me, the simplicity and sincerity in the lifestyle of the people here make this city quite interesting.
Dong Xoai, which translates to Mango, is a small city with its own unique charm. I noticed that this city seems like a resting point before entering the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The roads are not very busy, with only about 4-6 hotels, each often featuring karaoke as an added attraction. I stayed at a small hotel next to Coop Mart, with air-conditioned rooms costing about 500 baht per night. Although the room had some cigarette smell, it reflected the real atmosphere of this small town.
One experience I never miss is walking through Dong Xoai's morning market. The market is located on a long sloping street, lively and full of voices calling out to buy goods. The aroma of fresh food and fruits fills the air, especially mangoes, the city's namesake. Although not abundant, they are still available in the market. There is also a dog meat shop, a local cultural experience I encountered directly.
I strolled through the market tasting local food, starting with hot sticky rice paired with grilled pork marinated with spices. It wasn’t too spicy but fragrant with herbs. The grilling aroma was so tempting I couldn’t resist. Another dish I had to try was “Grilled Button Squid,” which I had seen in previous clips. These are small sea squids skewered and grilled over charcoal, fragrant and served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. So delicious I had to order several more skewers.
Food in Dong Xoai is distinctive because it is influenced by nearby provinces such as Dak Nong and Tay Ninh, which I have experienced before. This gives the food a balanced flavor that is not too spicy, suitable for all ages and genders.
Besides food, walking around this city led me to a central monument not far from the market, a spot where locals often relax and chat in the evening. There is also a lake near the city center that I tried to visit but couldn’t reach before dark. It’s another place I want to return to experience next time.
For those who enjoy visiting small towns that still maintain simplicity and the genuine lifestyle of locals, Dong Xoai in Binh Phuoc Province is another option not to be overlooked. Also, if interested in exploring or traveling to nearby mountainous provinces like Lang Son,read the stories I have shared hereto get a better overview of the interesting northern and northeastern regions of Vietnam.
I also recommend researching and planning a visit to the famous Buddhist temples in Da Lat city, such as Truc Lam Temple.Read about my experience visiting Da Lat templeswhich is located in Lam Dong Province, not far from Dong Xoai. It is a beautiful and peaceful temple, perfect for relaxing after traveling and tasting local food in Dong Xoai.
For traveling to Dong Xoai, I recommend taking a bus from Thu Hieu Mot city, which has convenient transportation. If you want to continue to other provinces like Vinh Long or Sa Dec, you can easily use bus services and transport stations in nearby cities.Read about my travel experience from Vinh Long bus stationto better understand the transportation system.
Finally, visiting Dong Xoai is not just about food and lifestyle but also about learning local culture that remains traditional and warm. I, mr.hotsia, assure you that travel lovers who enjoy food and community life will fall in love with this city just like I did.
