Lunch trip with mr.hotsia in Kontum, Vietnam: Delicious Vietnamese food from the heart of the city
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to arrive in Kontum city, a province located in the upper central region of Vietnam, known for its unique charm in both culture and cuisine. Today, I will share my lunch experience here, a time when I got to taste authentic Vietnamese food that is clearly different from what you find in big cities like Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi.
After arriving in Kontum in the late morning, the weather was quite hot and humid but not unbearable. I wandered along the quiet small streets filled with local eateries lining both sides. The aroma of fresh herbs and spices filled the air, making me excited to try Vietnamese dishes in a way I had never experienced before.
The place I chose to eat was a small family-run restaurant with old wooden tables by the roadside. In front of the shop, a vendor was grilling button squid over charcoal, and the fragrant smell of the grilled squid was very tempting. I ordered the grilled button squid first. Fresh squid from the sea was marinated with the restaurant’s special spices. The flavor was intense and the squid texture tender and chewy, earning my full thumbs up. (If interested in this dish, check out the video clip I recorded.)Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid(that I filmed as well.)
Next, I ordered chicken biryani, one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. The chicken was marinated with spices and baked until fragrant, served with jasmine rice cooked with onions and various spices. The taste was balanced and not too heavy on seasoning, perfect for the hot weather here. For me, this dish felt like home-cooked food made with great care. This restaurant also offers a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs to accompany the main dishes, a hallmark of Vietnamese cuisine that I really enjoy because it adds incredible freshness and harmony to the meal. I tried pairing the grilled button squid with fresh vegetables and a sweet and sour dipping sauce, which enhanced the squid’s flavor even more.
While having lunch, I noticed the local lifestyle here is simple but full of warmth. This small eatery seemed to be a community gathering spot. The sounds of laughter and friendly conversations created a relaxed atmosphere, making me feel that this trip was not just about tasting food but also experiencing Vietnamese culture and lifestyle from a different perspective.
If anyone is interested in traveling to central and northern Vietnam, I recommend stopping byLang Son Provincewhich is not far from Kontum. This province is charming with beautiful mountains and interesting local cuisine. It is also a gateway between Vietnam and China worth exploring. I have written stories and shared experiences there on my website. Anyone interested can click to read more.
Another place I recommend for those who enjoy peaceful atmospheres and cultural arts isBuddhist Temples in Da Lat Citywhich is not far from Kontum. Da Lat is a city known for its natural beauty and beautiful temples. If you have extra time, visiting the Zen Buddhist culture at Truc Lam Temple will make your trip more complete and memorable.
If you plan to continue traveling to other southern Vietnamese cities like Vinh Long or Nha Trang, which are famous coastal cities, I suggest gathering travel information fromVinh Long Bus Stationto plan your transfers conveniently and save time. For those who want to relax by the sea, you can stop byNha Trang Sea Beachwhich offers beautiful beaches, clear waters, and many water activities to choose from.
For my lunch trip in Kontum this time, I consider it an experience that deepened my understanding of Vietnamese food and culture. Tasting fresh local dishes cooked with heart and experiencing the local lifestyle up close made me feel that Vietnam offers not only great tourist spots but also a rich diversity of flavors and cultures waiting to be discovered.
