A refreshing morning in Kontum with simple Vietnamese-style breakfast by mr.hotsia
For mr.hotsia, every trip to Vietnam usually starts with searching for local breakfast that not only energizes but also truly reflects the local lifestyle and culture. This time, I visited Kontum, a city in the upper central region of Vietnam that is not yet widely famous but is full of natural charm and interesting indigenous tribal lifestyles.
That morning, I chose to walk from my accommodation to the morning market of Kontum. The morning market atmosphere was bustling with locals buying fresh goods, vegetables, fruits, and local food. The fragrant aroma of spices and herbs immediately awakened the senses. mr.hotsia enjoys this feeling because it is a real experience of the local life, not just about eating.
Breakfast in Kontum — Perfect Simplicity
The breakfast menu I tried in Kontum mostly consisted of simple dishes but with extraordinary flavors. It started with “Bánh mì,” Vietnamese bread that is crispy on the outside and soft inside, sliced into bite-sized pieces, served with various fillings including grilled pork, boiled eggs, and well-washed fresh vegetables. Another dish I liked was “Phở,” a large bowl with sweet and fragrant broth from long-simmered pork bones, chewy and smooth noodles, thin slices of meat, and a variety of fresh vegetables.
Additionally, mr.hotsia tried “Pork Rice Porridge,” which had a mild and balanced flavor, served in a hot clay bowl with side dishes like coriander and fresh chili. This dish is suitable for those who prefer something light but still retain the taste and aroma of fresh ingredients.
Life and Culture Around Breakfast
I noticed that most people in Kontum prefer to eat breakfast at markets or small roadside stalls rather than in hotels. This is because the food here emphasizes freshness and is much cheaper. Sitting and eating breakfast by the roadside while sipping Vietnamese coffee has become a warm daily routine full of community friendship.
mr.hotsia enjoys listening to the conversations between vendors and customers. Sometimes I pick up my camera to capture these impressive scenes because they best tell the true story of this small town.
Routes and Travel to Kontum
For friends interested in following mr.hotsia to Kontum, traveling here may require a flight to nearby cities like Da Lat or Nha Trang, then taking a bus or rental car into Kontum city, which is located in a province full of mountains and beautiful nature. If you want to see a Buddhist temple with beautiful architecture not far from Kontum, I recommendBuddhist Temples in Da Latwhich I have written about previously.
Also, if you want to experience the atmosphere of fresh markets and northern Vietnamese food culture, try visitingLang Son Provincewhere I have stayed and recorded stories in the past. Traveling in Vietnam is not as difficult as you might think, but you should prepare a bit for language and bargaining because locals here are not very fluent in English.
