Nam Định Province, Vietnam: The charm of the old town and life along the Red River

I am mr.hotsia, traveling to Nam Định Province in Vietnam with the intention to experience the atmosphere of a city that still firmly preserves its traditional Vietnamese identity. This city is located along the Red River in northern Vietnam and is not far from Hanoi. Nam Định may not be as famous a tourist destination as Hanoi or Ha Long Bay, but for me, strolling through the old town area, local markets, and tasting local food here made me feel like I truly traveled back in time to Vietnam's past.

Old Town Atmosphere and Riverside Fresh Market

From the first step into Nam Định city, the aroma of traditional Vietnamese food and the voices of street vendors at the fresh riverside market excited me greatly. The morning market here is lively and vibrant like no other. Here, you will see small vendors selling fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, and local dishes. Some stalls grill fresh button squid right on the spot, which I had seen inVietnamese Grilled Button Squid Videoa must-try delicious dish.

The morning market in Nam Định feels different from markets in big cities because people here still live simply and friendly. I tried Vietnamese chicken biryani at a roadside stall; the flavor was rich and fragrant with spices I will never forget. There are also boat noodle shops and local desserts that are hard to find in other cities.

Life Along the Red River and Ancient Temples

Nam Định is located along the Red River, which is an important transportation route and food source for locals. I took a boat ride to enjoy the Red River view in the evening. The clear water and peaceful atmosphere made me relax from the hustle of big cities. Seeing locals fishing and transporting goods by water truly reflects the close relationship between people and nature.

Additionally, Nam Định has beautiful ancient temples such as Bà Đế Temple and Phổ Minh Pagoda, which I visited. The tranquility and northern Vietnamese architectural art in these temples impressed me deeply. These temples serve as a connection point between the past and present of this province.

Travel and Accommodation in Nam Định

For traveling to Nam Định, I chose a bus from Hanoi which takes about 2-3 hours. The route is easy and comfortable. Once in the city, walking or renting a bicycle is the best way to explore because the streets are not wide and there are many small alleys to discover food and attractions.

Accommodations in Nam Định range from budget guesthouses to mid-sized hotels. I stayed at a small guesthouse in the city center where the owner was friendly and recommended local attractions. I think this experience made my trip more valuable because I could interact closely with locals.

Connecting Travel with Nearby Provinces

If you are interested in traveling in northern Vietnam, Nam Định is a great starting point because it is close to Lang Son Province, which I have traveled to and written about inLang Son Province Articlewhich features mountainous terrain and a border with China. If you like temples, I recommend reading aboutBuddhist Temples in Da Latwhich I visited and described the beauty of Tăng Lâm Temple in Da Lat.

Also, if you have more time, continuing to other cities in southern Vietnam such as Vinh Long to experience life in the Mekong Delta or Nha Trang sea beach for sea lovers is an interesting option.Vinh Long Bus StationandNha Trang Sea Beachare destinations I have experienced and recommend without hesitation.

Summary of mr.hotsia's Impressions of Nam Định

For me, Nam Định Province is not just a beautiful tourist city with interesting places but a place to deeply experience authentic Vietnamese lifestyle. The people here are kind and open to travelers who want to learn about the blend of past and present perfectly. If you like unhurried travel, local food, market strolling, and old town atmosphere, Nam Định is the answer I want you to try experiencing yourself at least once.

I, mr.hotsia, will return to write more about traveling in Vietnam because there are still many beautiful corners here waiting for us to discover.
