Nam Định Vietnam: An ancient city by the Red River waiting for you to discover

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Nam Định Province in northeastern Vietnam. This city may not be as famous as Hanoi or Ha Long Bay, but for those who love simplicity, traditional lifestyles, and authentic local flavors, Nam Định is a choice you should not overlook.

Nam Định is located on the banks of the Red River, an important river that sustains life in northern Vietnam. The city is full of history and culture woven together perfectly. I arrived in the morning, strolling along the river where locals were working and small fishing boats moved about, creating an atmosphere unchanged from the past.

Lifestyle and Morning Market in Nam Định

The morning market in downtown Nam Định impressed me greatly. It is the trading center for local villagers in the province. Fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood caught from the eastern coast of Vietnam are sold bustlingly. I tried Vietnamese grilled button squid, tender and fragrant with charcoal smoke, served with a local sweet and sour dipping sauce. Just one plate was enough to delight me.

If you are interested in deep local cuisine, I recommend watchingVietnamese Grilled Button Squidon my YouTube channel. You will see the preparation method and the market atmosphere here clearly.

Attractions and Temples

Nam Định has many ancient temples and religious sites waiting for you to visit. I stopped by temples with authentic Vietnamese architecture, different from those I have seen in big cities or other provinces like Dalat, which I have written about inBuddhist Temples in DalatThe temples here offer a peaceful feeling and a stronger sense of local culture.

Additionally, the surrounding area of the city has interesting natural and historical tourist spots such as local museums and artisan villages that still firmly preserve traditional lifestyles.

Travel and Accommodation

Traveling to Nam Định is not difficult. I chose to take a bus from Hanoi, which took about 2-3 hours. The roads are good and safe. There are also taxis and motorbike taxis available in the city, but I recommend walking around to fully experience the atmosphere.

For accommodation, I stayed in a small guesthouse with friendly owners, clean and affordable, suitable for travelers who want simplicity and closeness to locals. If you are interested in this kind of atmosphere, check out examples of guesthouses I have recommended in other provinces such asRecommended Hotels in Viet Tri Cityto get an overview of local stays in Vietnam.

Connecting Nearby Provinces and the Diversity of Northern Vietnam

While traveling in northern Vietnam, I passed through Lang Son Province, which has beautiful mountains and cool weather. You can read about this province inLang Son Province, Vietnamwhich is different from Nam Định, a flat area by the Red River.

If you plan to continue traveling from Nam Định, I recommend stopping by Nha Trang coast, famous for its clean beaches and various water activities.Nha Trang Sea Beachwhich will add variety to your Vietnam trip.

Summary of Impressions from Nam Định

For me, mr.hotsia, Nam Định is a city suitable for those who love a slow lifestyle, enjoy morning markets, taste local food, and want to experience the real northern Vietnam beyond the main tourist spots. Nam Định feels like a second home where I deeply connected and learned from the people here.

For anyone looking for a peaceful destination, Nam Định is the answer you should not miss.
