Exploring Unique Shellfish at Đồng Hới Fish Market, Quảng Bình, Vietnam

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today I have the chance to arrive at the cityĐồng Hớia small coastal town in Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. This place offers not only beautiful seas and pristine nature but also an exciting fish market calledĐồng Hới Fish Market(Đồng Hới fish market) which I must say, if you come to northern Vietnam and don't visit to see the unique shellfish here, you are missing out on something special.

Đồng Hới Fish Market is located in the heart of Đồng Hới city. It is a very lively fresh market in the early morning. I arrived at dawn to experience the atmosphere and the scent of the sea mixed with the fresh ocean aroma still full of moisture. This market not only sells fresh seafood but also various types of shellfish I have never seen anywhere else, including clams, mussels, tiger clams, and the most unusual ones with strange shapes and colors that locals continuously sell.

I walked around and saw local vendors selecting fresh shellfish just brought from the sea. I asked about these unusual shellfish and learned that many types are popular among locals, eaten fresh with spicy dipping sauce or pickled with salt and spices to create a balanced sour and salty flavor, which is the origin of the name “Đồng Hới fish market.”

Personally, I, mr.hotsia, really enjoyed tasting the pickled shellfish here. The flavor was unique and refreshing, clearly different from what I've had in Thailand. I tried the small bright orange pickled winged shellfish with a slightly fizzy sour taste and a crunchy texture. Another must-try is the grilled button squid sold nearby, fragrant with charcoal smoke, grilled until the skin is crispy but the meat remains tender, perfectly balancing the sourness of the pickled shellfish.

Getting here was not too difficult for me because I came from another northern Vietnamese province with a similar atmosphere, such as Lạng Sơn Province, which I have written about in an articleLạng Sơn Province, VietnamAlthough far from the coast, traveling by bus and motorbike allowed me to experience the diverse lifestyles and landscapes of northern Vietnam much better.

Back to Đồng Hới Fish Market, I would say the fun of visiting such a fresh market is not only about the fresh food but also about talking with local vendors. Some speak a little English, but I used gestures and smiles to communicate easily. I learned that some shellfish sold here come from deep bays and remote islands in Quảng Bình Province itself, not imported from far away.

For seafood lovers who want to experience authentic northern Vietnamese flavors, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Đồng Hới Fish Market. It will give you a new perspective on seafood and let you learn about the traditional fishing lifestyle that Vietnamese fishermen still firmly preserve.

Besides Đồng Hới Fish Market, Quảng Bình Province also has interesting natural attractions like the Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you have time, don't forget to visit. For those who want a relaxing stay in northern Vietnam, be sure to read my article aboutLạng Sơn Provincewhich is another destination I was very impressed with.

For this trip, I recorded a video that you can follow on my YouTube channel in the clipExploring Unique Shellfish at Đồng Hới Fish Market, Quảng Bình, Vietnamin case anyone wants to see the real atmosphere before visiting by themselves.
