Coastal fishing experience in Đồng Hới, Quảng Bình city, Vietnam

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to travel to the coast of Đồng Hới city (Đồng Hới), Quảng Bình province (Quảng Bình), Vietnam. This area impressed me greatly with its coastal fishing lifestyle and the way of life of the seaside villagers here.

Đồng Hới is a small coastal city with a long shoreline rich in marine resources. I arrived in the morning. The sunlight by the sea here is not as intense as I expected, possibly because the weather is influenced by the sea breeze and nearby mountains, which keeps the temperature from becoming too hot, unlike other northern provinces of Vietnam such asLạng Sơn Provincewhich I have visited and found to be very hot and humid in summer.

I woke up early to walk around Đồng Hới fishing port. I saw many fishing boats docked in a row. Some had just returned from the sea with baskets of anchovies, squid, and fresh shrimp caught overnight. The locals are skilled in traditional fishing methods such as nets and hand-operated hooks, which are not only their main livelihood but also reflect a deep connection with the sea.

I spoke with fish vendors at the coastal fish market and learned that most of the catch is sold in local markets or supplied to restaurants in Đồng Hới and nearby towns. There is also fish fermentation and sun-drying, traditional food preservation methods used by the locals. I didn’t miss trying freshly grilled fish over charcoal at a seaside stall. The sweet tender taste mixed with the fresh sea aroma reminded me of seafood inNha Trang Seawhich I had tried before.

Besides the fishing atmosphere, I explored Đồng Hới’s bustling morning market filled with a variety of goods including fresh vegetables, fruits, and freshly caught seafood. I bought fresh button squid, which was abundant, grilled it at a nearby stall, and tasted it with a delicious dipping sauce. It’s a flavor I will never forget (I have a video of grilled button squid I recorded onYouTubein case anyone is interested).

In the afternoon, I went to see the long coastal view of Đồng Hới. Small boats were lined up along the beach, some preparing to go fishing in the evening. The atmosphere was peaceful and simple. It reminded me of my travels in northern Vietnam such asBuddhist temples in Đà Lạt cityor traveling through Vinh Long bus station, which I have used before. Each place has its own charm and uniqueness.

This trip to Đồng Hới gave me a new perspective on Vietnam that many might not know. Besides experiencing the coastal fishing lifestyle up close, I enjoyed fresh seafood and absorbed the warm atmosphere of this small seaside town filled with friendly locals. I, mr.hotsia, recommend everyone to try this experience at least once.

For those interested in traveling to Đồng Hới, I recommend staying at small hotels or guesthouses with a friendly atmosphere, similar to where I stayed inViệt Trì citywhich, although budget accommodations, provide basic amenities and allow you to truly experience local life.

Travel Information and Tips from mr.hotsia

Getting to Đồng Hới is convenient with buses and vans from major cities in Vietnam such as Hanoi and Da Nang, taking about 6-8 hours. Within the city, you can use motorbikes or affordable taxis. I recommend preparing a 3G internet SIM card for easy communication and information searching (read more aboutVietnam 3G Internet SIM)

Finally, if you enjoy exploring local lifestyles and fresh seafood, visiting Đồng Hới in Quảng Bình province will be a very worthwhile experience that I, mr.hotsia, want you to try yourself. You will surely take home the scent of the sea and the sincerity of the people here.
