Rowing a Boat to Sell Crabs at Đồng Hới, Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Đồng Hới city, Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam, a coastal port city that still retains the charm of traditional local fishing life in a fascinating way. Especially the experience of rowing a boat to sell crabs that I personally encountered is one of the stories I want to share with all fellow travelers.

In the early morning at the riverside market near the coast of Đồng Hới, local fishermen row small boats out from the sea to sell fresh crabs caught directly from the ocean. These boats carry baskets of fresh crabs, their shells shiny and vibrant. The atmosphere is filled with the sounds of conversations and bargaining between vendors and locals in the market in real time.

This style of rowing boats to sell crabs reminds me of the riverside and seaside lifestyles of communities in northern and central Vietnam, which still preserve traditional fishing culture. It is not only a source of food but also an integral part of local culture worthy of deep study.

Lifestyle and Fresh Seafood at Đồng Hới Market

After boarding the boat and exploring the market, I tried fresh crab from the sea prepared simply by boiling or steaming, served with a spicy seafood dipping sauce that is sour, salty, spicy, and slightly sweet—perfect for my Thai palate. There were also other seafood like shrimp, grilled squid, and steamed fish sold fresh by the locals. I observed the simple preparation methods that emphasized freshness.

What I enjoyed most was talking with the vendors, most of whom are locals. They shared stories about their lives and fishing practices that require patience and knowledge passed down through generations, making me truly feel the bond between the people and the sea here.

Traveling to Đồng Hới and Its Connection to Quảng Bình

Đồng Hới is the capital city of Quảng Bình Province, located in central Vietnam. Quảng Bình is famous for its beautiful nature and large limestone caves such as Phong Nha Cave and Paradise Cave, which I have mentioned in other articles related to this province.

Traveling to Đồng Hới is convenient with an airport and train station connecting to major cities in Vietnam. I, mr.hotsia, chose to travel by train from Lạng Sơn city where I previously stayed (read more atLạng Sơn Province, Vietnam), which took about half a day, allowing me plenty of time to explore the market and harbor fully.

Mr.hotsia’s On-Site Impressions

Rowing a boat to sell crabs in Đồng Hới this time was not just a casual tourist activity but an immersion into the real lifestyle of the people here. I witnessed their hard work and happiness in daily livelihoods. The sea scent and gentle waves mixed with the sounds of rowing boats and shouting bargaining in the market made me feel like I had traveled back to a time when life was simple and friendly.

If anyone has the chance to visit Quảng Bình, don’t forget to set aside time to experience the market and harbor of Đồng Hới in the morning. It is an experience I, mr.hotsia, guarantee will give you a true taste of Vietnam, from the freshness of seafood to the warmth of the local people.
