Rice Steamed with Chicken Phan Rang | Eating Vietnamese Chicken Rice

When it comes to Vietnamese food, many people might think of Nem Nuong, Nem Mok, or Pho. But in reality, Vietnam has many more delicious and interesting local dishes. One of them that I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to try is “Vietnamese-style Chicken Rice” or Rice Steamed with Chicken Phan Rang, a specialty of Phan Rang city in Ninh Thuan province, located in the south-central region of Vietnam.

Phan Rang is a city I passed through during my trip in southern Vietnam. Normally, this city is not very prominent for tourists, but for those who love to seek authentic local food, Phan Rang is a very interesting destination because it offers chicken rice that is completely different from the chicken rice found in Bangkok or other big cities in Thailand.

The uniqueness of Phan Rang’s chicken rice lies in the method of steaming the rice together with the chicken, which allows the rice to absorb the broth’s flavor and the aroma of the herbs used to marinate the chicken fully. The chicken meat is firm and tender, neither dry nor too soft. It is served with a dipping sauce that has a balanced sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavor. Some places even add fresh chili and pickled garlic for an extra spicy kick.

I, mr.hotsia, remember sitting in a small shop near the Phan Rang morning market. The aroma of freshly steamed rice and chicken was so tempting that I couldn’t resist ordering the largest portion to try immediately. The hot steamed rice had beautiful grains, not too oily, and the taste of the rice perfectly blended with the chicken’s flavor. The broth was smooth and helped cut through the richness very well.

If anyone is interested in trying Vietnamese chicken rice in Phan Rang, I recommend stopping by the morning market in town, where several local restaurants sell the original chicken rice recipe. You will also get to experience the authentic lifestyle of the Vietnamese locals.

Travel and Context of Phan Rang City

Phan Rang is a city located in Ninh Thuan province, a coastal province with a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful nature. If you have read my articles about Nha Trang sea beach,Nha Trang Sea Beachyou will see that the central coast of Vietnam is full of beautiful beaches and marine attractions. But Phan Rang has a different charm because it is a city where locals still live simply and preserve their local food culture well.

Traveling to Phan Rang is convenient, with regular bus and train services passing through. I personally took an intercity bus from Vinh Long, the starting point of the Mekong Delta, stopping to visit the morning market before continuing to Phan Rang.Vinh Long Bus StationThis is an important connection point that allowed me to experience the diverse food and culture of southern Vietnam.

My Experience Eating Chicken Rice in Phan Rang with mr.hotsia

For me, mr.hotsia, eating chicken rice in Phan Rang is not just about food; it is about experiencing the life, warmth, and friendliness of the locals. I clearly remember sitting in a small shop where the owner was a retired grandmother. She told me that the chicken rice here is made following an ancient recipe passed down through generations, using local herbs like ginger, garlic, and lemongrass to marinate the chicken, making it fragrant and free of any unpleasant smell.

I also saw the traditional steaming method where the owner gently steamed the rice and chicken together over low heat, resulting in soft rice grains with a rich flavor, making it feel like eating more than just ordinary rice but a dish full of the cook’s story.

After finishing the meal, I was advised to try it with a special dipping sauce made from fresh chili, lime juice, and pickled garlic, which perfectly complemented the chicken rice. It is a taste I will never forget and want everyone to try for themselves.

Connections to Other Tourist Attractions in Vietnam

If you have followed my work, mr.hotsia, you will know that I often connect eating experiences with traveling. Just like I shared in my articles aboutLang Son Provincewhere I visited beautiful mountains and tried local dishes like roast duck, or my trip to the Buddhist temples in Da Lat city,Buddhist Temples in Da Lat Citywhere I took a cable car up the mountain to enjoy the view and the peaceful atmosphere of the beautiful Zen temple.

Eating chicken rice in Phan Rang is a great starting point to explore the culture and nature of central and southern Vietnam because the city is close to many tourist spots and has interesting local markets to stroll and try various snacks.
