Old Church in Dong Hoi, Quang Binh, Vietnam: Ruins of Tam Toa Church
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province, located in the central part of Vietnam. The main destination of this trip was “Tam Toa Church,” a place not well known among Thai tourists. But for those who love history and the beauty of ancient ruins, this is an unforgettable highlight not to be missed.
Upon arriving in Dong Hoi city, I felt the peacefulness of this small riverside community along the Mekong River. The route to the old Tam Toa Church is not difficult; you can easily take a motorcycle taxi or a regular taxi at an affordable price. The church ruins are located in the city center. It is an old Christian church heavily damaged during the Vietnam War. However, these ruins have become a scene that reflects memories and creates a uniquely mysterious atmosphere.
I walked around the church ruins, where only walls and main structures remain. Tam Toa Church was built during the French colonial period in the late 19th century, showcasing Gothic architecture that is unusual in this region. Although much of it was destroyed, the remaining bricks and stones still stand tall, inviting us to reflect on the long history of this area.
The atmosphere here is very quiet, with only birdsong and the breeze passing through the old church ruins. I felt as if I had traveled back in time to the past. Visiting here reminded me of stories from other provinces in Vietnam I have been to, such asLang Son Provincewhich offers a peaceful rural atmosphere that is different but equally charming.
After exploring the old church, I took a stroll through a nearby local market. It was full of authentic Vietnamese food stalls, including chicken biryani, grilled squid, and local desserts that are hard to find in big cities. I recommend trying the grilled button squid, which is very flavorful and fresh. I also recorded it in a video.Vietnamese Grilled Button Squidthat I filmed myself.
This trip also reminded me of visiting temples with similarly peaceful atmospheres, such asBuddhist Temples in Da Latwhich I have visited and found very beautiful and serene. It is perfect for those who want to experience the lifestyle and religious culture of Vietnam. Although Tam Toa is a Christian church, it offers a strong and profound feeling just the same.
For travelers planning to visit Dong Hoi and Tam Toa Church, I recommend preparing your trip in advance because this church is not located in a main tourist area. Communication with locals may require some gestures or a translation app, but the friendliness of the people here will make you feel warm and deeply impressed.
If you enjoy travel filled with stories and history, I, mr.hotsia, believe that visiting the old Tam Toa Church in Dong Hoi will be a fulfilling and unique experience unlike typical tourism. My journey in Dong Hoi was not just about visiting ancient ruins but truly learning about the history of the city and its people. As I, mr.hotsia, often say, a good trip is one where you experience the real life of locals. Here, Tam Toa Church is a window that clearly reveals those stories.
