Vietnamese riverside lifestyle at Sông Đào, Nam Dinh Province
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Nam Định Province, one of the provinces that still preserves the charm of authentic Vietnamese lifestyle in a fascinating way, especially the area along the Sông Đào River. This is not just an ordinary river but the heart of the local community that has sustained people's lives for a long time.
Upon arriving in Nam Định, I immediately felt the simplicity and warmth of the people here. Although the water in the Sông Đào flows slowly, the riverside life is vibrant. Many locals still use small wooden boats for transportation or traditional fishing. Similarly, the small floating market along the river is a meeting point for locals and vendors to exchange goods and fresh food.
Traveling to Nam Định is not difficult. I chose the route from Hanoi, about 100 kilometers away, where you can take a bus or rent a private car to explore the beautiful rural scenery along the way, similar to when I visited Lạng Sơn Province (Lạng Sơn Province, Vietnam) which is also full of mountains and rivers. But in Nam Định, the focus is on the flatness of the river plains and the fertility of the agricultural areas.
Local Markets and Riverside Food
One of my favorite experiences as mr.hotsia was visiting the morning market of locals by the Sông Đào River. Here you can see fresh vegetables, local fruits, seafood, and rare local dishes such as Vietnamese chicken biryani, which is similar yet distinctly different from our version (Vietnamese Chicken Biryani) or grilled button squid fragrant with charcoal and spices (Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid)
). The riverside market here is like the heart of the community. Locals gather to chat, exchange news, and buy fresh food. I tried taking a small boat along the river to observe the traditional fishing lifestyle, including net fishing and collecting mussels, which are a staple food of the community.
Preserved Traditional Lifestyle and Culture
Nam Định is not only about nature and delicious food but also full of temples and spiritual centers for the locals. I have heard stories about Buddhist temples in Dalat city (Buddhist Temples in Dalat City) which, although far away, reflect deep Buddhist faith. There, I saw that locals strictly maintain traditions and rituals. In Nam Định itself, there are ancient temples and folk rituals harmoniously integrated with daily life.
While walking through the market and small streets by the river, I saw many elderly people living simply and warmly chatting. There are small cafes serving authentic Vietnamese coffee, whose fresh roasted aroma perfectly complements the atmosphere of this town.
Connecting Experiences with Other Northern Vietnam Provinces
If you enjoy traveling like me, mr.hotsia, who loves exploring local lifestyles, I recommend comparing the atmosphere here with nearby Lạng Sơn Province (Lạng Sơn Province) which features high mountains and cool weather. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Vinh Long bus station (Vinh Long Bus Station) to explore southern Vietnam, which is also an interesting option.
Regarding accommodation, Nam Định may not be as lively as major tourist cities, but I found a small guest house with a warm atmosphere similar to where I stayed in Việt Trì city (Recommended Hotels in Việt Trì City) which suits travelers wanting to experience real Vietnamese life without focusing on luxury.
Overview and Recommendations for Travelers
I, mr.hotsia, recommend that when you visit Nam Định, don’t miss the chance to stroll along the Sông Đào River in the morning and evening to see the real life of locals who still maintain traditional ways. Prepare your camera because the image of small wooden boats with old wooden houses by the river and fresh markets is very impressive.
Also, don’t forget to try local food from roadside stalls and fresh markets, as the flavors here will make you feel like you’ve unintentionally traveled back in time. If you want more information about traveling and tourist spots in northern Vietnam, I have written stories aboutLạng Sơn ProvinceandBuddhist Temples in Dalat Citywhich will help you plan your trip better.
Finally, visiting Nam Định and the Sông Đào River for me, mr.hotsia, was an eye-opening journey that showed the simple yet profound life of Vietnamese people who live peacefully and preserve their culture well. For those who want to experience real local life beyond just beautiful social media images, I highly recommend this place.
