SAPA 2015 Sapa 2015: The charm of Northern Vietnam's mountains you must experience yourself
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit Sapa in 2015, located in an unspecified province in Northern Vietnam. Many people probably know Sapa as a beautiful mountain tourist town with fascinating hill tribe lifestyles. Sapa is situated in a landscape full of high mountains and enjoys cool weather all year round, which impressed me from the moment I set foot on Sapa soil.
My journey started from Lang Son city, a nearby province I had visited before (if you want to know about my experience in Lang Son, you can read it atLang Son Province, Vietnam). The trip from Lang Son to Sapa, although time-consuming and winding through mountain roads, was a good preparation allowing my heart to slowly adjust to the changing atmosphere.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Sapa
In 2015, Sapa still preserved the traditional hill tribe communities well. I had the chance to stroll through the morning market in Sapa, where vendors wore colorful traditional costumes selling farm produce and local handicrafts. The market was filled with lively conversations and the aroma of local food, such as the grilled button squid I tasted and featured in my video.Vietnamese Grilled Button Squidwhich gave a true taste of Northern Vietnam.
I walked along natural paths surrounded by vibrant green terraced rice fields. The Hmong and Giay hill tribes here still live traditionally and peacefully. They greeted tourists warmly with smiles, and although communication was challenging, body language and smiles made me feel a strange warmth.
Must-Try Food and Flavors
Besides grilled button squid, Sapa offers many local dishes I recommend trying, such as chicken biryani, which differs from versions in other parts of Vietnam, as I recorded inVietnamese Chicken Biryaniwith its unique blend of herbs and spices. Additionally, local tea and coffee provide warmth against the cool weather here.
Accommodation and Transportation
I chose to stay in a small guesthouse with friendly owners and affordable prices, perfect for backpackers like me. Getting around Sapa is convenient by motorbike and on foot, allowing me to truly experience the local lifestyle and the town's atmosphere.
If you are interested in a Northern Vietnam itinerary like mine, I recommend connecting routes from Sapa to Lang Son province and other cities like Da Lat, which has beautiful Buddhist temples such as Truc Lam Pagoda (read more atBuddhist Temples in Da Lat) or if you prefer Southern Vietnam's sea, Nha Trang is another interesting destination (Nha Trang Sea Beach) where I have strolled and captured the atmosphere to share.
Firsthand Experience from Sapa
What impressed me most was the peace and natural beauty of Sapa. Despite many tourists, the town still retains the essence of the mountain community well. Walking through villages surrounded by mountains and thick fog reminded me of movies and novels about life on highlands.
If you are looking for a Northern Vietnam destination beyond big cities and temples, Sapa is the answer I, mr.hotsia, want you to experience yourself. You will fall in love with its simplicity and beauty just like I did.
