Sapa, Vietnam, a city of mountain views and hill tribe culture you must experience
I, Mr.Hotsia, had the chance to visit Sapa, located in northern Vietnam. This city has been popular since the French colonial era. Sapa has cool weather all year round, with stunning views of high mountains and vast terraced rice fields, which impressed me from the moment I got off the bus.
Sapa is close to the Chinese border, and when I arrived, I hardly felt like I was in Vietnam because the town and architecture looked clean and beautiful, blending European style with local culture perfectly. I strolled through the small town full of colorful hill tribe communities, including the Black Hmong, Xinh Tho tribes, and excitingly, the Tai people who migrated from northern Thailand. It felt warm and friendly in a way I can't describe.
A highlight of Sapa I want to recommend is walking to seethe terraced rice fieldsthat stretch widely along the valley from a high viewpoint. It’s like a living painting. I suggest visiting in summer or early rainy season because the terraces are lush green and the weather is not too cold, unlike winter, which I heard is so cold that you hardly want to leave your accommodation.
Besides nature, Sapa also hasSapa marketwhich is lively and full of local products such as unique handwoven fabrics, silverware, and handmade hill tribe crafts. In this market, you will experience authentic local life and have the chance to taste local dishes with rich flavors, like sticky rice fermented with herbs and grilled pork scented with spices.
Importantly, I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend visiting the Cat Cat hill tribe village, not far from the town. Here you will find the beautiful Silver Waterfall and a peaceful atmosphere. You can experience the daily life of the hill tribe people and deeply learn about their unique culture.
Travel and accommodation in Sapa
Traveling to Sapa is quite convenient for Thai travelers because it’s not far. I took a bus from Hanoi to Sapa, which took about 5-6 hours. The road passes through beautiful and ever-changing landscapes. Upon arrival, you can stroll around the town or rent a motorbike to explore comfortably.
Sapa offers various accommodations, from budget guesthouses to five-star hotels. I stayed at a small guesthouse in town with a very friendly owner, complete with internet and hot water, perfect for travelers wanting to experience the local atmosphere. If you are interested in other accommodations in Vietnam, I have also recommendedguesthouses in Viet Tri citywhich are also interesting.
Connecting the Sapa experience with other attractions in northern Vietnam
Sapa is a great starting point for traveling in northern Vietnam, where many other interesting cities and provinces await, such as Lang Son province, which I have stayed in and recommended in my articles.Lang Son province, Vietnamwhich features limestone mountains and beautiful caves, as well as the Ky Cung River flowing through Lang Son city, offering a distinctly different atmosphere from Sapa.
Additionally, for those who enjoy temples and want to experience tranquility, I have recommended Buddhist temples in Dalat city, Lam Dong province, including Truc Lam temple located on a mountain surrounded by the beautiful Tuyen Lam lake.Read more about Buddhist temples in Dalat cityhere
