Must-Know Before Going to Sapa | Sapa travel tip by mr.hotsia

When talking about Sapa, many people may think of a small town in the northwest mountain range of Vietnam, filled with steep mountains, indigenous tribal lifestyles, and cool weather all year round. For mr.hotsia, who had the chance to experience Sapa firsthand, I must say that Sapa is not just an ordinary destination but an experience that requires good preparation before traveling to enjoy a happy and safe trip.

How to Prepare for Traveling to Sapa?

Sapa is located in Lang Son province, which has a terrain that is 80% mountainous with the highest peak being Fansipan at 3,143 meters above sea level. The route to Sapa is not easy because the roads are winding and some parts are very narrow. I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning your trip in advance, especially if you travel by bus or van from Lang Son city or Hanoi.

If traveling from Hanoi, you can take a passenger bus at the main bus station in the city. It is advisable to book tickets in advance as seats are limited during the high season. Also, choose an early departure time to arrive in Sapa by the afternoon, so you won't rush and will have time to adjust to the cold weather here.

Weather and Clothing to Prepare

Sapa has cool weather all year round, especially at the end of the rainy season and beginning of winter, which I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting because of the beautiful views and the weather is not hot and humid like in Lang Son city (read more about Lang Son province atLang Son Province, Vietnam)

Clothing to prepare should include thick jackets, wool hats, and gloves because nighttime temperatures can drop to 10 degrees Celsius. I personally experienced such cold weather that I had to buy an extra wool hat from a local market at a cheap price with very good quality. This was a memorable experience I want to share.

Accommodation in Sapa and Nearby Areas

Sapa offers a variety of accommodations ranging from budget guesthouses to five-star hotels. I, mr.hotsia, prefer staying at small guesthouses owned by locals because it allows me to absorb the lifestyle and easily talk with community members. However, if you prefer convenience, there are many hotels available in downtown Sapa.

For those interested in exploring Lang Son city before or after visiting Sapa, I recommend Hoang Son hotel where I stayed. It is affordable and very convenient, close to the market and a small lake, allowing me to experience local food and the unique mountain town atmosphere (read more reviews atLang Son Province, Vietnam)

Local Food and Must-Visit Local Markets

Sapa is a hub for local foods from various ethnic tribes such as grilled black pork, native chicken, and sticky rice with fresh vegetables grown locally. Additionally, the morning market in Sapa is a favorite spot of mine, mr.hotsia, because it offers fresh vegetables and fruits, dried foods, and handmade crafts from the tribes.

If you have read my articles about the morning market in Mukdahan or coffee shops in Phan Rang, you will understand that visiting local markets helps us better understand villagers' lifestyles. It is the same in Sapa. Trying local food from small stalls in the market is the most authentic and unique taste experience.

Travel and Small Tips from mr.hotsia

Traveling in Sapa can be done by using local motorbike taxis or taxis, but you should negotiate the price before getting on because tourists are often charged higher than locals. I, mr.hotsia, have experienced this and recommend asking prices from several drivers or using apps to estimate fares, which helps a lot.

Another important matter is preparing an internet SIM card for use in Vietnam, which helps with communication and information searching. I, mr.hotsia, have written an article recommendingVietnam 3G Internet SIMwhere you will learn how to choose and use a SIM card suitable for traveling to Sapa.

Don't Forget to Capture Photos and Stories from Sapa

Sapa is a charming town with mountain views and tribal culture. It is perfect for hiking, sunrise photography, or even sipping coffee while watching the morning mist. I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing a good camera and spare batteries because you will find beautiful spots you want to capture all the time.

If you are interested in Buddhist temples in Vietnam, I have written about Tang Lam temple in Dalat city, which has a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views. If you want to change the scenery and extend your trip after Sapa, you can read more atBuddhist Temples in Dalat City

Summary

Sapa is not just an ordinary tourist town but a destination that requires good preparation and planning to truly experience mountain life, natural beauty, and diverse local food. I, mr.hotsia, believe that if you visit Sapa, you will fall in love with this town just like I did.
