Experience traveling in Son La Province, Northern Vietnam with mr.hotsia
When talking about traveling in Northern Vietnam, many might think of Lang Son city or Dalat city with its beautiful Buddhist temples. But this time, I, mr.hotsia, would like to take you to explore another province that many people are not very familiar with, which isSon La Provincewhich is a province with beautiful nature and a very interesting community lifestyle.
Traveling to Son La, a province hidden in valleys and high mountains
Son La is located in the northwest of Vietnam, bordering Laos. It is a province with high mountains and forested areas covering more than 80% of the total area. Traveling to Son La is not as easy as you might think because most routes pass through high mountains and winding roads. But for me, mr.hotsia, this is the true charm of traveling.
Upon arriving in Son La city, I chose to stay at a small guesthouse in the city center with a warm atmosphere and affordable price, which made me feel like I was truly experiencing local life. The city is not very big but has a very lively fresh market in the morning. It was the place where I tasted local food and closely observed the daily life of the locals.
Son La Morning Market, a hub of culture and local food
The morning market in Son La is not much different from markets in other Vietnamese cities, but what makes this market stand out is the variety of products and the cultural atmosphere of the Hmong and other ethnic groups living nearby. I, mr.hotsia, walked amidst the sounds of bargaining and the aroma of food, including sticky rice, grilled pork, and fresh vegetables sold energetically.
The dish that impressed me the most was “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani,” which has a rich flavor and uses local spices, different from what I have eaten in big cities. Just talking about it makes my mouth water. If you want to try authentic Vietnamese food, check outVietnamese Chicken Biryaniin my video recorded during this trip.
Nature and adventure in Son La
Son La is not only good in the city but also has many amazing mountains and caves, such as To Thi Mountain, where I climbed to see the mountain views around the city. You can see the landscape of a small town hidden in the valley. This view reminded me of my trip to Lang Son Province,Lang Son Province, Vietnamwhich also has high mountains and beautiful nature.
Additionally, Nhi Thanh Cave and Tam Thanh Grotto are other places I recommend visiting. The tranquility and mystery of nature here make you feel like you are traveling back in time to Northern Vietnam's past.
Local lifestyle and ethnic culture
One of Son La’s charms is the opportunity to experience the lifestyle of indigenous ethnic groups such as the Hmong, Thai, and other tribes who still strongly preserve their customs and traditions. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to talk and learn about handwoven textiles and also try local dishes made from fresh local ingredients.
Participating in local festivals, such as ethnic culture preservation events or tasting local grilled button squid (which I featured in my videoVietnamese Grilled Button Squid), was a memorable experience that truly enriched my travel feelings.
Travel tips from mr.hotsia
Traveling to Son La may require time and patience because most transportation routes are mountain roads and local buses. I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing your health and wearing suitable shoes for hiking and climbing. Also, learning basic local language phrases will greatly help communication with locals.
For accommodation in Son La, there are small guesthouses and homestays with affordable prices and a warm atmosphere, suitable for travelers who like simplicity. I once stayed at Hoang Son Hotel in Lang Son city, which is in a good location, close to markets and food spots. If anyone is interested, you can find more details atLang Son Province, Vietnambecause the atmosphere is similar and the travel distance is not far.
