Vietnamese Khanom Krok, a roadside delicacy that mr.hotsia must share

When talking about Khanom Krok, many might think of the Thai version fragrant with coconut milk and pandan leaves, but Vietnam has its own unique style that is so delicious mr.hotsia must share from personal experience in northern Vietnam during my travels.

Although not a province famous for Khanom Krok like other local dishes, Vietnamese Khanom Krok is a snack you can find at roadside markets or walking streets in various cities, just like I tried in Lang Son Province.Lang Son ProvinceA small border town next to China with a rich blend of cultures and many interesting local foods.

A Unique Aroma and Flavor

Vietnamese Khanom Krok mainly uses rice flour mixed with fresh coconut milk and a little sugar. The batter is poured into a half-spherical iron pan with many small holes, similar to Thai Khanom Krok. The highlight is the toppings, which include finely chopped dried shrimp, green onions, or crushed peanuts sprinkled on the batter before cooking, creating a fragrant coconut aroma and a crispy texture in every bite.

What impressed me most was the freshness and care of the Khanom Krok vendor at the evening market in Lang Son. Every bite I tasted felt like experiencing the lifestyle of northern Vietnamese people. Although the city is not very large, its food culture is second to none.

Travel and Close Connection with Vietnamese Khanom Krok

If you want to try authentic Vietnamese Khanom Krok, I recommend visiting markets or walking streets in various cities, especially in Lang Son Province. I stayed at Hoang Son Hotel in the city center, just a short walk to a market full of diverse foods, including Vietnamese Khanom Krok.

Watching the vendor skillfully scoop batter into small pans and carefully add toppings is a memory I cherish from this trip. Importantly, Vietnamese Khanom Krok is very affordable—just a few tens of thousands of dong for a small tray of delicious snacks to satisfy your hunger while exploring.

I often say that small local foods like Vietnamese Khanom Krok add color to my travels because it’s like tasting the real life of the people here—not just eating to fill up, but eating to learn about culture and lifestyle.
