Grilled Chicken at Viet Chi Market, Vietnam: A Delicious Must-Try at the Local Market
I, mr.hotsia, have had many opportunities to travel to Vietnam, and recently I stopped by to experience the atmosphere of Viet Chi Market. This is not just an ordinary fresh market but a hub of exciting local food culture, especially the “grilled chicken” which became one of my most memorable experiences from this trip.
Viet Chi Market is not located in a well-known city or province, but it is one of the local markets that firmly preserves the traditional culture of Northern Vietnam. I arrived at the market in the early morning, the busiest time, and the aroma of grilled chicken greeted me as soon as I stepped in.
Market Atmosphere and Local Lifestyle
This market is filled with lively conversations, complex scents of fresh food and various spices. Stalls selling fresh chicken, boiled chicken, and grilled chicken are neatly lined up, with cheerful young vendors welcoming customers. Walking through the stalls, I saw large chickens prepared for grilling over charcoal. The smoky scent from the wood fire reminded me of the market in Lang Son province, which I have visited before (read more in the articleLang Son Province, Vietnam)
Most chickens sold at Viet Chi Market are native breeds raised closely, not factory-farmed, resulting in firmer meat and richer flavor than elsewhere. Besides the grilled chicken I loved, there are also boiled chicken and Vietnamese-style chicken biryani that are highly recommended. I tried them and was so impressed that I asked the shop owner about the recipe (watch the video of the market atmosphere and various chicken dishes atVietnamese Chicken Biryani)
Chicken Menu and Variety at the Market
The grilled chicken at Viet Chi Market is unique for its Northern Vietnamese spice marinade using local herbs such as lemongrass, garlic, pepper, and fish sauce. Grilling over charcoal makes the chicken skin crispy and fragrant, while the meat remains tender and juicy. I, mr.hotsia, didn’t miss buying grilled chicken to enjoy with hot sticky rice, a popular dish among Vietnamese people.
Besides grilled chicken, I also tried “chicken biryani” at a nearby stall. The rice grains were beautiful, infused with spices, and the chicken was stewed until tender and melts in the mouth. This dish impressed me with the diversity of Vietnamese food at this local market.
Travel and Connections to Nearby Provinces
For travelers interested in experiencing Viet Chi Market, I recommend preparing for the journey as this market is not located in a big city or main tourist destination. However, once you visit, you will understand that the sincerity of the sellers and the freshness of the ingredients here are definitely worth more than the price.
If you plan to travel in Northern Vietnam, I suggest stopping by Lang Son Province, which I have mentioned in the articleLang Son Province, Vietnamwhich is not far from Viet Chi Market and offers many beautiful natural attractions to explore, adding variety to your trip.
