Tai People, Tai Language in Sapa, Vietnam: A Journey Connecting Highland Cultures
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to the northernmost part of Vietnam in the mountain town of Sapa, famous for its beautiful nature and diverse ethnic communities. But what impressed me more than the mountains and thick fog was meeting the “Tai people,” also known as the “Tai language” group, an indigenous tribe whose language closely resembles our Thai language in an incredible way.
The Tai people in Sapa live a simple lifestyle intertwined with the surrounding nature. Most houses are built from wood with traditional thatched roofs. I traveled to Ho village, one of the villages inhabited by the Tai. The first feeling I experienced was the warmth and friendliness of the community. Although Vietnamese is not their main language, I, mr.hotsia, surprisingly could communicate in the Tai language, which is very close to our Thai.
Talking with the Tai people here showed me that the Tai language is not just a spoken language but also a bridge connecting memories and cultures once shared in the past. The Tai shared stories of migration and their bond with the surrounding nature. They also have customs similar to northern Thai people, such as wearing handwoven clothes and practicing mountain agriculture.
Lifestyle and Culture of the Tai People in Sapa
I spent several days exploring the village and talking with locals, witnessing a daily life that still preserves its traditions admirably. The terraced rice fields in Sapa are well known, but the Tai here have agricultural techniques passed down through generations. These terraces are not only food sources but also cultural heritage reflecting the deep relationship between people and the mountains.
Besides agriculture, Tai weaving is another fascinating wisdom. Each handwoven fabric has unique patterns telling stories and beliefs of the tribe. When I tried wearing the traditional outfit, I felt like touching the history and pride of the Tai people truly.
Travel and Relaxation in Sapa
For traveling to Sapa, I recommend planning ahead and choosing bus or private car services from Lang Son, a province with mountains and nature similar to Sapa and a convenient connecting point. If anyone is interested in more details about Lang Son province, you can read atLang Son Province, Vietnammy own
Upon arriving in Sapa, accommodations range from small guesthouses to luxury resorts. But I, mr.hotsia, usually choose to stay at Tai homestays in the villages to truly experience the community’s lifestyle. The surroundings are peaceful, with morning fog and cool weather, perfect for genuine relaxation.
Food and Local Markets in Sapa
Another joy of traveling is tasting local food and visiting the morning market in Sapa. The market is full of fresh produce and natural ingredients like local vegetables, wild mushrooms, and home-raised meats. I enjoy strolling through the early morning market bustling with people and lively conversations, which truly reflects the community’s vitality.
My favorite dish here is “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani,” which is slightly different from ours but very delicious. You can watch how it’s made and the atmosphere of eating chicken biryani in the video I made.Vietnamese Chicken BiryaniThere is also fresh seafood from markets in nearby towns like Nha Trang, which I have written about in an article.Nha Trang Sea BeachIt is another interesting destination if you want to extend your trip to southern Vietnam.
Summary: Sapa and the Tai People – A Journey Connecting Past and Present
Sapa is not just an ordinary tourist town but a place full of stories of the Tai people who have preserved a language and culture surprisingly close to ours. Experiencing the Tai lifestyle opened a new perspective for me, mr.hotsia, that shared language and similar culture can truly connect humanity.
