Discover the Tai Valley in Sapa: An Experience Mr.hotsia Must Share
Sapa, a city known to many as a destination for nature and culture lovers in northern Vietnam. But for me, Mr.hotsia, this trip opened a new world with the discovery of the “Tai Valley,” a Tai community (known in Thai as “Thai”) that remarkably preserves its traditional way of life.
Previously, I met the Black Thai people in Dien Bien Phu, which was already a special experience. But meeting the Tai people in Sapa excited me just as much because here, the Tai do not wear black clothes like in Dien Bien Phu, nor do they speak the same language as our Lao Song. Instead, they speak Thai in a way that sounds very familiar. I rented a motorcycle to explore and finally found a small village hidden in the valley. The scent of the forest mixed with the aroma of local food made me feel as if I had traveled back to my hometown.
What impressed me most was the Tai people's Thai language here. Although the accent has changed somewhat, if you listen carefully, the vocabulary and sentence structure remain like ancient Thai. For example, “ปู่” is pronounced “ปู๊” and “ไก่” becomes “ไก๊,” making communication with the locals smooth and warm, like talking with relatives.
Lifestyle and Culture Still Alive in the Valley
The Tai people in Sapa still worship house spirits, similar to some areas in Thailand I have visited. This made me feel that this journey deeply connects Thai culture across borders. I bought local ingredients and asked them to make a unique Tai-style omelet, which tasted and smelled just like the omelets from home. This is one of the unforgettable experiences for Mr.hotsia.
The Tai village is located in a valley with cool weather all year round, similar to the atmosphere of Lang Son province I have visited before (Lang Son Province, Vietnam), which has high mountains and hot, humid summers. But Sapa is cooler and fresher. Walking around the village, you see locals wearing traditional clothes, farming, and weaving fabrics with dedication.
Travel and Preparation Tips for Those Who Want to Follow
I recommend preparing your body and mind for riding a motorcycle on winding mountain roads that can be slippery during the rainy season. The trip from Sapa town to the Tai Valley takes about 1-2 hours, depending on the route and road conditions. Importantly, don't forget to bring a jacket and suitable shoes because the valley's weather is quite cool even during the day.
