Phu Ly Morning, Vietnam: A vibrant early morning full of local flavors
When it comes to a city that truly retains the essence of traditional Vietnam, the name “Phu Ly” must be at the top of my list, mr.hotsia. Phu Ly is not a large city, nor does it have luxurious landmarks like other tourist destinations. But the mornings here are my favorite time because I get to see the real lifestyle of the people and taste authentic Vietnamese breakfast dishes that are hard to find in big cities.
I arrived in Phu Ly on a cool morning after taking a bus from nearby provinces such asLang Son Provincewhich I recently visited. Phu Ly is located not far from the Chinese border. It is a small town with a bustling morning market and street food stalls scattered throughout the alleys.
Phu Ly Morning Market: A hub of fresh produce and local food
Walking through Phu Ly morning market, the first thing mr.hotsia noticed was the aroma of fresh herbs and spices wafting through the air. Stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and various meats were neatly arranged. The local vegetables here are very fresh and crisp; some types I had never seen anywhere else before.
The highlight of the market is the street breakfast stalls that open from 5 AM. I didn’t miss trying “Banh Mi,” the Vietnamese baguette soaked in a flavorful broth with various fillings such as grilled pork, minced pork, or even tender steamed fish. The stall I visited, “Banh Mi Phu Ly,” is near the market entrance. The chef-owner cooks and serves personally. This kind of atmosphere doesn’t need to be fancy; just good taste and sincerity from the cook are enough.
Authentic Vietnamese Breakfast: Grilled Button Squid and Chicken Biryani
Another dish mr.hotsia had to try was “Grilled Button Squid.” I saw locals grilling fresh squid over charcoal. The aroma of grilled squid mixed with unique Vietnamese spices was irresistible, so I ordered some immediately. The squid was tender, not chewy, with a perfectly balanced rich flavor. Eating it with hot sticky rice was a perfect match.
There is also “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani,” seasoned with authentic Vietnamese spices. The fragrant spices are unlike any other. The rice is soft and the chicken tender, served with a sweet-spicy dipping sauce that made me forget all other chicken biryanis. If you’re interested in watching the fresh cooking process, I have recorded a clip on YouTube, which you can watch atVietnamese Chicken Biryani
Morning Lifestyle and City Atmosphere
Morning in Phu Ly is not just about food. It is also the time to see people starting their work early. Vendors quickly set up their stalls, and community members come out to shop. I passed by a group of elderly people sitting and chatting under a big tree, reflecting the peaceful and warm atmosphere of this small town.
If I were to compare it with other places in Vietnam, I have experienced Buddhist temples in Da Lat city, which have a quiet and beautiful Zen temple atmosphere.Buddhist Temple in Da Lat CityBut Phu Ly has simplicity and an environment focused more on the real life of the locals. This makes traveling in Phu Ly charming in the mr.hotsia style, which loves discovering genuine and unembellished experiences.
Travel and Accommodation in Phu Ly
Getting to Phu Ly is straightforward. I used bus services from nearby provinces, which are convenient and reasonably priced. Within Phu Ly, most travel is by motorcycle or on foot because the roads are narrow and not crowded.
I stayed at a small guesthouse in the city center. The price was affordable, suitable for travelers who prefer simple accommodation and want to truly experience local life. If anyone is interested in this style of lodging, I recommend checking the linkRecommended Hotels in Viet Tri Citywhich has a similar atmosphere and very kind owners.
mr.hotsia’s Impressions of Phu Ly
For me, Phu Ly is a city perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and experience authentic Vietnamese local life. Mornings in Phu Ly are full of the colors of fresh markets, local food, and the lively community. Although it is not a large tourist city, the sincerity of the people and the flavors here make me want to visit again.
