Recommended Dessert Shops in Hoi An Market: Delicious Walks in the World Heritage City

When talking about Hoi An, a small town with a nostalgic charm of Northern Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, must say that the “Hoi An Market” is one place I never miss when visiting here. This market is not only good for fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, or souvenirs, but also has interesting dessert shops with flavors I personally tasted and must share.

Hoi An Market is located in the heart of the old town, just a short walk from the Thu Bon River. The sweet aroma of traditional Vietnamese desserts fills the market. I walked past various dessert stalls, from Banh Hoi—thin rice vermicelli rolled into small bundles, lightly fried and topped with sweet and sour dipping sauce—to sweet stuffed chive dumplings that are soft and smooth on the tongue. These desserts are colorful and cute in appearance, making me stop to taste them every time.

Must-Try Desserts in Hoi An Market

One of my favorite desserts is “Banh Dap,” a crispy rice and mung bean flour cracker perfectly combined and served with sweet peanut sauce. I found myself eating several pieces without realizing it. The taste is sweet and rich, crispy outside and soft inside—truly addictive.

There is also “Che Bap,” a sweet corn dessert with red beans and fresh coconut milk. The flavor is mellow and just sweet enough, with coconut milk so fragrant and rich that I had to ask for an extra bowl to refresh myself on a hot day.

If you like something unique, I recommend “Banh Mi Nuong,” a Vietnamese grilled bread topped with egg and fresh butter. It’s crispy outside, soft inside, with the aroma of fresh butter and perfectly cooked egg. Paired with strong Vietnamese coffee, it’s a delightful snack I often choose every morning at the market.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Hoi An Market

Here you will experience authentic Vietnamese culture. Besides the delicious desserts, the market’s atmosphere is filled with the warmth of local people who smile and willingly chat with tourists like me. Walking through Hoi An Market early in the morning, you’ll see vendors wearing conical hats preparing fresh desserts. Some will invite you to taste their treats in a friendly way, making me feel like I was strolling the market with old friends.

This market also offers desserts made from traditional recipes from various Northern and Central Vietnamese ethnic groups, such as those I saw in Lang Son Province, where I once stayed and explored local food markets (read more atLang Son Province, Vietnam). Some desserts are similar, but Hoi An Market is more diverse and colorful due to its status as a tourist city and a World Heritage site.

Tips for Exploring the Market and Tasting Desserts like mr.hotsia

I recommend starting your market walk early in the morning because fresh desserts come out early and the market is less crowded. I usually stroll slowly, tasting a little at a time without rushing to fully enjoy each dessert’s flavor.

Don’t hesitate to ask vendors about ingredients or preparation methods, as many are happy to share the story behind their desserts. This made me feel like I was learning about culture through food at the same time.

If you want to relax after walking the market, I suggest sitting down with a cup of Vietnamese coffee in one of the small, cozy cafes scattered throughout Hoi An. I have also written about coffee shops in Phan Rang with a similar atmosphere (seeCoffee Shops in Phan Rang)

Summary of Impressions from Hoi An Market

Hoi An Market is not just an ordinary food market but a gateway to the flavors and lifestyle of Vietnamese people that impressed me deeply. Trying local desserts here added great color to my trip. Each bite carries stories and culture. If you have a chance to visit Hoi An, don’t forget to stop by this market and try the desserts I recommend. I guarantee you’ll get authentic flavors unlike anywhere else. For those planning to travel Northern Vietnam, besides Hoi An, provinces like Lang Son also have many interesting places and foods that I have written about inStories of Lang Son Province
